Evening everybody,

A returning member here after a few years of not owning any aquariums, I have been given a very small tank (less than 30L) and would like to put it to some use... I haven't even found a place for it at home yet but looking for some advice. Realistically I know my choice of what I can keep is very slim however it would be nice to have something for my children to help me look after (4 and 5 years old). Water in my area is very hard (West Norfolk). Does anybody have any suggestions? I was thinking a Betta or maybe a small amount of tetras/Danios? Any help much appreciated! Got a few weeks as the filter is brand new so would need to get it up and running and cycled first anyway,

Eventually the plan is to invest in a larger tank and use this as a hospital/quarantine tank when I can afford it!

Thanks!

For a tank this size and hard water I'd look at endlers. Just males as females are bigger, plain grey and would have a lot of fry. Half a dozen male endlers should be fine; there are several different colour varieties in fish shops. They are bright colours which should appeal to small children and with a few different colours/patterns they could name each one.

Bettas and tetras are soft water fish; danios are extremely fast swimmers so need a tank at least 90 cm long, preferably more.

I second the endlers idea. They don't need much space, they're nice looking, and they do well in hard water. Our pet store sells feeder guppies, and some of them are surprisingly beautiful! And they cost less than a buck a piece.

Welcome back to the forum... :hi:
With such a small tank and harder water, some small livebearers would be okay.
