So I have been reading up on refugiums and I would like to build a diy one for my 25 gallon reef.
What I want to know is have any of you guys built one for a smaller tank like a 25 gallon and if so do you have any tips on how to do it?

I had to go and look up the term refugium! lol
What sort are you hoping to build? Planted? Extra filtration? Feeder stock?
Sorry - as I was completely unaware they existed until a few moments ago I can't help with the build, however I'm interested to see how it works.
Will you be making a journal if you go for it?

First question would be, where have you got the space to put it? They're often set up as part of a sump if under the tank, but I've set fry tanks up essentially as refrugiums on a level tank with an overflow running back to the main. A local friend of mine has a display refugium with a mantis shrimp in it alongside his main tank, water parameters are the same and it simply runs off a pump to provide water from the sump on the main system with the overflow running back, essentially having both tanks working off the same sump with their own filter/overflows.

I think I will be building a hang on back refugium out of an old HOB filter it will be filled with some live rock ruble and chaeto algae.
If i do build it I will make a build journal.
I know it won't be very big or actually deal with a very large portion of my nutrients but it's more for a test build so I can get the hang of how they work.

I know a few people who have hob filters and use them as a mini refugiums, they have alot of success with them. I dont know a huge deal about it myself as i have a refugium in my sump. What i do know is chaeto is worth having for your tank!

Aquaclear filters are good candidates for HOB DIY refugiums. I've read a number of successful builds with them over time. I also had a very nice mini refugium going with one for the better part of a year with nice fauna. I used a clip-on IKEA LED as the light source. I didn't even really mod the insides of the filter; I just took out the insert and dumped in a bunch of chaeto. If you want a bigger one with any sort of animals larger than pods as a CUC though you'd need to mod it with a grate between the impeller chamber and the rest of the filter (similar things would be needed on most HOBs I've seen). Unfortunately, a power outage caused the filter to stop, and the water level in the tank was apparently too low to get it going again when the power kicked back on. The result was that the chamber to heated up due to the motor and evaporated abnormally fast, so it turned sour in the couple of days it sat unnoticed. That's not just something that can happen with aquaclears; it's a risk with any HOB filter, so you just have to make sure to check that the flow is going and not be absent minded about it like I was. The bigger the filter chamber the less likely that will be to happen too; mine was one of the smallest models and, of course, tiny volumes are less stable when in isolation.

Yeah I haven't decided if I'm going to try a HOB filter or actually modify a larger plastic tub to hang on the back so I have more room.
If I can figure out how to move my tank to a new stand I will actual build an overflow and set up a 10 gallon tank underneath as a sump/refugium.
