I would second the T. hengeli nomination.  A great looking (small) fish and will do very well in the same water as the cories, although, as pointed out they aren't from S.A., but I don't think that's a concern is having.
 
 
CPDs or other microrasboras also should fit the bill nicely as well...  Most of them enjoy a heavily planted tank, so I'm not sure if that's the way you want to go or not.
 
Here's the tank as it is right now. Ten cory and a gazillion shrimp, but nothing in the mid to upper water column.

A nice school of LAMPEYES would look lovely in that tank.

^ that was supposed to be blatant, not subconscious :p
 
Think I would go with a school of neons or cardinal tetra, my mickey mouse platys sit at the top too:p
