Hiya,
I have a goldfish in an 8G tank (I know it may sound small but the goldy is only 2 inches at the most).
Quite a lot of orangey/rust coloured algae builds up on the glass and rocks quite quickly, even with water changes, so I was wondering if anyone can recommend a small algae eater that can survive in a coldwater tank?

Cheers

none can survive in an 8g with a 2" goldie. the goldie has already grown out of your tank. need to rehome him in a bigger tank.
what type of goldie do you have?

Um how is it too small?
Here's a pic and he looks fine http://p-russell.co.uk/fish.jpg

Buying a bigger tank will be a bit pointless as he looks fine in there, has a lot of swimming space and generally seems happy and not agitated.

Its not so much how he looks, its more a case of how much water is required to dilute the amount of waste a goldfish can produce. The general rule of thumb is that you need 20 (us) gallons for a single adult fancy goldie (more for a common like yours), and then a further 10 gallons for each goldfish after this.

Also, they need a lot of swimming room when they get larger.

He'll be cramped in a few months unfortunately, so you should really consider a larger tank soon. I have a fancy goldfish in a 20 gallon long tank. The benefits of the larger tank means you can get some WCMMs too :) They're great little fish.

Commnos grow very quickly and are very messy (I see you have an Elite Mini, which has a pretty poor amount of media in it at any rate). Plus, goldfish are social- you're certainly doing it no good by keeping it alone in a small tank.
