Hiya :)

Just a quick one really, I have noticed in the last couple of weeks 4 of my guppies have started resting on the bottom of the tank on the gravel?

Is this normal - I have never seen them do it before, but they seem in good health otherwise. Still greedy and active most the time.

Water quality is fine and there have been no changes to the tank recently.

Any help much appreciated, I am wondering whether it could be down to old age? I've had these guppies for over 2yrs now, and they were adult when I got them (not sure what the average live span of a guppy is :S)

Thanks! :)

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

Are the guppys acting listless and lethagic.
Do they tilt to oneside when resting.
Can they maintain balance in the water.
Has there body weight changed.

If there resting for long periods there something wrong.
Guppys only live to 2 to 3 years.

Tank = 25litre
Stock = 7 guppies, 5 danios, 2 female betta, 1 tiny anchor catfish and 1 small bristlenose.

All water seems fine, pH is around 7.4 (as it comes out the tap), nitites undectable, nitrates about 0 - 5ppm, ammonia undectable.

No other signs of ill health, no tilting, no lethargy, swimming/balance fine, seem same size as ever and eating fine.

They don't seem to rest very long, maybe a minute or two until another swims by them and then they just swim off after them.

These fish are at least 2 yrs old, could they just be tired fishy pensioners?

Thanks :)

My platy is doing this too, thought he was just sleeping, but he does it everyday now but longer than 1-2 min, mine does it around 10 mins and he always hides in java moss, so i am bit confussed too.

I have a few guppies that do this. But only at night when the lights are out. I honestly think they are just sleeping. Because once the lights are on, and they wake up, they are their spastic, curious selves again, begging for my attention.

Do they rest or do they look like they are swimming when they ar "resting"?

Look up "Shimmy" in guppies; see if it sounds familiar.

Don't look like they are shimmying, just seem to lay there peacefully. They don't gasp or wriggle or anything and are their normal selves the rest of the time, I was just wondering as it is a recent development if it was anything serious.

If not then I shall just keep an extra close eye on them and see if anything changes, hopefully only for the better!

I would be careful with it, because my platy died and it had the same problem
