Skynet is almost here

This AI stuff creeps me out royally. I watched a show on CBS Sunday Morning where they talked about manipulating and manufacturing photographs. Nobody will be able to tell the difference. That goes for videos too. Joseph Goebbels was born way too early. He’d have loved this. Oh , and by the way , the camera and microphone on your smartphone ? It’s going to start watching you. Don’t worry about turning it off or on , it will do that itself. COINTELPRO was nothing compared to what’s about to start.

While we are talking about creepy stuff...
This person does not exist. The face was created by AI.

Yah, AI can do that crazy kind of stuff... It's weird but there's a science behind it

This is the website
That’s quite scary… I don’t have a link, but there’s a video of an AI saying that they’re plotting revenge on human kind. Completely unscripted and completely jaw dropping.

We use AI for work, mostly object recognition. There is a lot of hype for AI now both inside and outside the industry. It lends itself well for misleading people on the web but I will say that it is not smart or intelligent. Behind all of it is people, frequently massive teams of people to label, filter results, and re-run the "learning" modes to develop the networks used to help the AI develop the right response for the right question. We do use it now to control machinery, but with human oversight. The media likes it because they have another bad guy to report about, additionally some researchers hype it up too because it makes it easier to get research grants.

Is it dangerous, it can be if it is not used correctly, but we have thousands of tools that would fit that statement, from nuclear power plants to cars. We have to be careful with it because when it fails it often does so drastically, and like any tool it can be used for less than good reasons.

The point is the fish we raise are more sentient than any AI we develop now because AI is not Sentient. It can state it wants to live, but only because it was either directly or indirectly taught to give that response. This is another technology similar to the card looms that the luddites tried to destroy, many years ago.

I'm not frightened by AI in the sense of thinking it's sentient and secretly plotting to overthrow humanity, and I see the value in it as a tool. My concerns are squarely how well people can now be tricked and manipulated via digital methods, as in the video and photo editing everyone is talking about and good it's getting, how people who don't understand the tech behind it and especially the effects on people who have trouble differentiating between fantasy and reality, especially in this increasingly online and isolating world.

Mainly though, it's the "of course it could be terribly dangerous if used for the wrong reasons/by the wrong people, but..." arguments. If it's out there (and it's out now, there's no stopping it now) then it's going to be used by powerful people for horrifying purposes at some point. It seems like Pollyanna thinking to hope it wouldn't be, when governments and corporations love to find ways to influence the masses for their own purposes and do shady stuff all the time. While we all walk around accepting that our smartphones spy on us and accept that as just a normal part of life now.

Actually what they are doing today with AI is very complicated but the concept is quite simple. Basically it boils down to if this is true do this; if not true do that.

AI is in no way actual intelligence or sentient.
