Skimers....what are they for, what do they do, why do you need em?

and the same questions about wet/dry filters, plus, what's the difference between a regular filter and a wet/dry?

i'm a noob....i admit it.... :D

Skimmers are for the removal of disolved wastes and excess nutrients. Some people believe the foam you find washed up on shore after a storm is the same process, but it would remove VERy little compared to the volume of water in the ocean! :p

There are several systems people run in their tanks to make the use of a protein skimmer un-neccessary. Basically natural systems like sumps and deep sand beds etc. But other people would swear by using one. I never did and i was fine.Im looking at running a SW with a sump, live rock, and deep sand bed soon. So i wont be using one!

As for wet dry filters.....maybe someone else could answer that one for you.... Lol
