I am thinking of buying one of these but i need to know how far my tank needs to be away from the wall as this could be a problem for me.
also what do most think about this filter ? I currntly have a whisper 60 that works well but i need to find one that i can put extra media in to control my high phosphate and nitrates, and i thought the extra media basket would be nice but i have also looked at the penguin 350 and fluval 305 canisters so i am kinda looking for any opinion i can get on these 3 filters.

Hi, Post this topic in Tropical Chit Chat. I think you will receive more replys.

Kind Regards, Richard

You need about 5" from the back of tank to a wall for the 280. The 350 is inferior to the Emperor 400 (2 slots vs 4). The Emperors also have two separate water pump paths. The newer Emperors with the biowheel window indicators also have a one touch flow reducer for feeding in addition to the adjustable spray bars. The Penguins don't have any of those features. IMO go with the Emperor 400. There's nothing in that price range that can even compare.

Doesn't the emperor 400 need like 7 or 8 inches to fit in the back? It is one big hob.

No, the depth of the 280 and 400 is about the same. The 400 is basically just a 280 with an extra biowheel and larger motor. The overall depth may be about 7" but part of that goes inside the tank, so what's left is about 5".
