Feedem. Considering buying the 18 x 12 x 12 tropical aqaurium starter kit for £73.00 which is pretty good as thr only tihng im gonna need to buy is play-sand.

Heres its description.
Contents: Aquarium, hood, condensation tray, internal power filter, fish net plastic plant, ornament, fish food, aquasafe, background picture, light heater/stat, thermometer. Size 18" x 12" x 12. :good:

That sounds a lot of money to me but it probably has more to do with local prices than anything. In my world that is a 10 gallon tank and the money translates to about $150. Aren't there local places that list things for sale used that might give you a better price?

yeh would have 2 agree u would get that probably half the price from ebay :)

have to agree you could get it cheaper elsewhere. i also find with buying started kits 'new' that the filter/pump is crappy and doesnt do the job as well as it should.

plus im guessing you have to pay postage on top of that!!!!!!!!

It does sound a bit steep, though don't forget it's not just the tank. If you add up the cost of the other bits: net, water conditioner, ornament, food, background, heater/thermostat, thermometer etc. - that's going to cost a few quid. I preferred to buy all these bits separately so we could choose (OK, so my daughter could choose. I'd said no to Nemo, sea-horses and turtles, so thought it was only fair not to argue about pirate ships and 'coral'.) But was a bit shocked at how it all added up. I guess you've already got bucket, gravel cleaner, test kit, algae scraper etc.

Having said that, you could get a really good second hand tank very cheaply, and buy all the bits yourself for less, if you don't mind a second hand tank. You could try Freecycle if there's one near you - might even be able to get one for nothing. A lot of people give up fishkeeping when their fish die while cycling or the first time they clean out the tank, so you can find some in good condition. Then you have a bit more to spend on a good filter if it doesn't have one, a heater with an automatic cut-out so it won't blow up if you accidentally leave it on during a water change, timer for the light, and those other bits that make life a bit easier...

Yep got gravel and stuff? Where can you get second hand tanks other than ebay? don't need automatic cut out heater just a plain heater. And the timer i don't need one as i have one on main tank and when that goes on and off i'll copy. 7am 2 7pm.

Try the Buy, Sell, Swap forum? There's usually a couple of tanks available, but depends where you live. You could do a Wanted post, say where you are and whether you can collect.
Or is there a Freecycle near you (look on the internet)?
Or put up a card in your local supermarket (they usually have a board), or community hall, etc. - Wanted: Fish tank...
You might get some of the extras with it, if it's someone who's given up fish keeping.
Good luck!
