Singular Fish For Ten Gallons

Is there a particular reason you're stuck on the idea of a single fish? There's a lot of cool things you could fit into a small tank, including mated pairs and small shoals. Outside of Bettas and a few related fish, virtually everything you can fit one of comfortably in a 10 gallon is going to make the tank look pretty damn sparse.

I would suggest one of the following

Small group of Bumblebee Gobies
Small breeding colony of Endler's Livebearers
Pair of Peacock Gudgeons
2 Pair of Scarlet Badis
Pair of some Killifish or the other

and so on.

Uhhh the only Puffer available in Aus (where the OP is from) is a banded puffer which gets huge and needs full marine when it's full grown...

Shellies are seriously expensive, gets annoying about the prices don't it? Choices I would go with if it was me...

A yabby (so yeah I like crustaceans)
Dwarf Gourami (if you can get a good supplier, most around here at least have some weird disease that gives them ulcers)
A Pair of Killis (they can be bought from http://www.livefish.com.au/index.php?main_...amp;cPath=1_41)
A Purple spotted gudgeon (one of our very own natives, can be bought from http://www.livefish.com.au/index.php?main_...products_id=45)
A Paradise fish, either black or normal
A blue or gold ram.

How expensive are shellies? You couldn't really fit many in a 10g anyway, and christmas is coming up if they are really expensive.

Expensive. Is no one breeding them there? Shellies are a good choice but you'd be limited to two or three depending on species. With some, you could only do one of them actually.

Dwarf Puffer would be great if you could find somewhere that sells them though I don't know their status in Australia so it might be impossible to get them. Dwarf Gouramis I think would be good too.
