Just have a thread archive for inactive threads. They can still be searched but don't appear in the main topic areas. Thats what we do on the VW websites, so that we dont loose good tech articles etc. Theres just a big "vault" of a forum thats for archived stuff, listed according to topic type (ie tech, chat, engine builds, readers rides etc).
