I was at the store today and they had these silvertip tetras. They were quite pretty as they were more of a golden color than silver. Does anyone have these and are they somewhat of a folden color? Also, do they school together nicely? I am also thinking about rummynose tetras, but I haven't seen any in the lfs. What's prettier? What schools together better of the two? THANKS!! :D

IMO, rummies school tighter than any other fish.

The silver-tip tetras I had tended to rather aggressive for tetras.

I keep both species of Tetra, and although neither school particularly tightly in a community tank enviroment it is obvious that the Rummy Nosed Tetras would do so if they felt threatened or needed to do so, they do swim and group together more tightly than the Silver Tip Tetras. These tend to be like Cardinals and Neons when in a community tank situation, they will roam about freely paying little attention to each other, except for the occasional domestic pecking order arguement! Both are peaceful Tetras that will trouble little else IME.

I agree with Ryan, one of the common questions here is what schools well, another is why aren't my xyz schooling? The fact is that schooling behavious is a defensive strategy rarely seen in smaller crowded tanks, if you took the "non-schooling" neons and put them in a large tank with a lot of open water where predators could be lurking, they will school up.

I have kept Silvertips and 2 kinds of Rummy Noses, both are nice little fish - I've had no trouble with either. I have seen posters here saying that Silver Tips were aggressive, I can only say mine never have been.

I have 5 silver tips, the only problems i had was introducing blind cave tetras with them they attacked them other than that they get on very well with oll the other tank mates (see sig)

I have rummy's in my tanks and they are never seperated, they are always moving and swimming from one end of the tank to the other together....I think they are the tightest schooling fish you could get..IMO

I bought the rummynose tetras. I bought 6 and lost 1 the next day. These are, without a doubt, the tightest schooling fish I have ever seen. They are so cool to watch, they never leave each other. Now I have to decide if I want a couple of yoyo loaches or not. I'll be trading in some of the emperors since they don't school, so as always, decisions, decisions... :D

I've got 5 silvertips and they are rarely schooled together except in times of need.

For instance they usually get on fine with my rainbows, infact they all hang out together, but when the most dominant rainbow chased the smallest silvertip into some plants the other day the rainbow shot back out again followed by all 5 tetras.

Solidarity brothers
