Hi everone , is there a way to stop silver dollars from ruining my plants. I remember having them a couple of years ago and really liked them but had to get rid of them because of my plants.

Comments Appreciated :shifty:

If there is I havn't found it, even though I fed a wide range and amount of veg/fruit to my SD's they still ate my plants. Maybe plants such as java moss might withstand it or other tough/bad tasting plants.

I remember someone saying once that they managed to keep their silver dollars off their plants by feeding the fish lettuce on a regular basis and by only keeping tough hardy aquarium plants.

Really? My silver dollars demolish everything even with full tummy's  .
That said the only thing I havn't tried is anubias, but with my pearsei in the tank aswell it wouldn't stand a chance, he has big teeth.
They ate java fern and java moss .

Maybe once they get the taste or plants they don't stop.

That said I'm becoming bored of my silvers, although being one of the best diversion fish (who created the word dither?!) and having lively behaviour, they're no way as interesting as my cichlids. Maybe aswell as me trying something new, you could too...Something plant friendly?

You cant stop a herbivorous fish from eating plants, its like trying to stop sheep from eating grass

Silver dollars plus plants is normally a loosing battle! At least it was when I had SDs, they cleared the live plants (admittedly there were only a few and they were soft leaved ones) and then left little teeth chew marks on the plastic plants   . You may be able to slow down the destruction by having some type of vegetable food on offer in a clip ALL the time, like lettuce, cucumber and so on, instead of limiting them to just 3 -4 feeding times like I did.....?
