Would a shoal (6-7) of silver dollars be ideal companions for a lone catfish (Ocellifer) in a 190 litre tank.? And if so what other options do i have in terms of stocking after the silver dollars have gone in and settled down. I need some colour but not Gouramis. What about Angels.?

The silverdollars will be alright in that tank. You have a whole lot of choices because silverdollars are so peacuful. Silverdollars will go well with angels. The catfish will be fine to. Silverdollars are peacuefull and don't bother anybody. Trust me I've kept silverdollars for years. Here are some tankmates that you can chose from( black tetras,neons,glowlight,othertetras,some plecos,some lace cats,oscars,etc,etc).
I keep silverdollars to. Not the regular ones the redhooks. I have a shoal of 6 redhooks. They are doing well in a shoal. They swim together. They are peacuful to the other fish. Sorry Alex but i havent actually bought the silver dollars yet, was hoping to get them this weekend. My catfish is alone in the tank at the moment so im looking for tankmates for him. I think Angels and silver dollars are the way to go.

So i added 6 Silver Dollars to the tank and they adapted very well even along side a 7" catfish, they have plenty of places to hide and as soon as he has eaten they all come out and have so far eaten shelled peas, flakes, pellets, and savaged a cuBe of bloodworm, which completely went against there "vegetarian pirhana" description.
I have the tank done up very dark as is my want, (plenty of bogwood with black glass sand) and i will hopefully be introducing 2 beautiful yellow angels this week.
Thats should be that unless i can find a shoal of large cardinals (large enought to not fit in the catfish).
Any other suggestions for new arrivals appreciated.

Silver dollars are very active fish and are serious frenzy feeders, as you've already worked out *lol*. Wait until they're 5-6" and going at food like that - you'll find some fish are spooked by them - they used to petrify my old oscar. I'm sorry to tell you that in the long run they'll need a bigger tank too.
In the meantime though, they seem to go crackers for any kind of vegetation - whether thats plants in you tank or peas/lettuce/etc. Mine weren't fussy though and viciously went for any food that went in - I don't think they really care what they eat (although *we* should care what they eat) - as long as they get it first and don't leave anything for any other fish. They also used to steal pleco wafers from the plecs.
In the end I rehomed mine because everything else in the tank was hungry and miserable, but I've read of others keeping them in really big tanks with oscars and the likes with no problem.

id say your pretty much fully stocked with the silver dollars and like kathy says there gonna need a bigger tank eventually.
i have 6 and there about the size of a small dinner plate and skittish as hell.
theyll need the space they have.

They will eat live plants, so don't put any real plants in the tank or they will be nipped to shreads.

I doubt it Barry - they don't seem to be the ones that get spooked, more like the ones that do the spooking, if you get me. They're just so active in general, and very frenzied at feeding times (much like their cousins).

sorry, off the topic slightly, does your ocelifer come out at all or does he hide all the time?
i have one and he is a beautiful fish but i rarely see him. he lives with a trio of silver sharks and doesn't bother them one bit

Hey Nath, i actually bought him because he looked so nice, i was told that he would hide all the time but its not the case. He is always out and if he is hiding and i want to show him off i just tap the glass lightly and he comes out and follows my finger around the tank.I have a few hiding places for him but they are all in full view of the front of the tank.
