silver dollars with jack dempsey?

Certainly possible, but the tank needs to have enough space for both to get out of each others way (75 gallons is a nice size) and you'll want enough Silver Dollars to distribute any aggession (and often when there's too many fish to pick on, they all end up getting ignored). I will warn you that with tough guys like JD's there's never guarantees, only possibilities.

if you havent bought either yet, i suggest you buy larger sds and a smaller jack. i would also try to pick a ''nice'' one from the tank if you can choose. often you can tell by how a fish acts in the tank how it will behave in the future

Start with a smaller Jack Dempsey and raise it with the silver dollars. Sometimes Jack Dempseys can be peaceful.

yer my cousins got huge silver dollars with thier kribs, including quite a few small ones raised in the tank , so i suppose it would be ok. But if I was a fish I'd be terrified to live with them

I wouldn't do it, even with my juvie JD's that I had they attacked everything that ever was in the tank. I don't recomend it.

The 4inch Jack Dempsey I got is the most gentle guy ever. He's with a baby oscar and a super small baby Jack Dempsey.

It really depends on the tempermant of the actual Jack Dempsey, but on average, the Jack Dempsey is most likely to be very very aggressive.

Check my signature...my jd was at least 6 inches when we got him and had been homed with other jds, a severum, some plecos, and i can't remember what all else. The guy had his tank way overstocked. He has always been pretty peaceful. Every now and then if someone gets in his way, he will flare out but that is all.

Fishkeeping is trial and error. Fish have different temperaments and sometimes what works for one will not work for the other. I can't stress this enough as I have had so-called peaceful community fish attack others mercilessly, and aggressive fish live peacefully.

i always try to find the 'nice' fish in the tank. if a fish is being picked on in the tank its in, it probably is submissive. thats what ive noticed. my jack dempsey is about 5-6 inches long, and was in with 2 silver dollars about 2 inches up and down, but one died overnight. i dont suspect it was the jack, as he is a nice docile guy. just get larger silver dollars, and a nice small jd, if you can.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I think I might go this route once I get a bigger tank. But there's NO NEED TO SHOUT SWAMPCAT.

Sorry about the capital letters just in a hurry and caps lock on.

Look around for different species of silver dollars, there is about a dozen, all will schoal toghether. Gives some variation, some are round and keep the silver dollar shape others grow ablong. Some dollars have spots, some have just one spot. One species has an orange coloration under the belly and a goldish tint. Another species is a little darker and stays smaller. The redhooks get about 8-10 inches. These species all have big scientific names, do some research.

These fish are one of my favorites. Great fish! One pair I have is 10 years old, one of these guys just died two days ago, I think old age?
