Silver dollar eggs

I was cleaning my tank today and as i removed some of the water, it looks as if i have tons of eggs stuck to the inside of the glass. I have never seen sd eggs before, so have no idea what they would look like. Alll I do know for sure is that there are many many little spots stuck to the glass on the inside of thier tank and they are the only inhabitatants besides 1 danio. I do know what Tetra eggs look like, and these resemble them, but are smaller.

My head and tail lights have also laid me a tank of eggs, and I am so at a loss as to what I will do if these eggs survive.

I did some searches on sd eggs, but was unable to locate a pic of them, or anyone who has seen any. It said that they should hatch in 3 days and be free swimming in about a week. It also said that the parents will not eat the eggs, so I will just die if they are eggs and in a week i have a tank full of babies.

I found the following info. for you:

Breeding is only possible in a large, shallow tank. Silver Dollars often spawn in schools. Recommend water with the following values: a pH 6.0-6.5, a water hardness of 4-8 dH, and a water temperature of 79-82°F (27-28°C). Have floating plants and slightly dimmed light. About 2000 eggs are produced by each female. The eggs fall to the bottom. Remove the adult fish after the spawning. The fry hatch in 3 days, and are free swimming after 6-9 days. They first eat plankton, but later, will take vegetable flakes.
Breeding is difficult because of the volume of water needed for a group of fish to spawn.

It was off of a pretty honorable site, but you never know!

Thank you for the reply Silver, I also read what you have written above and everything fits except the very large tank. There are 3 of them in a 40 long tank which is shallow compared to my 55. I have been moving around all of my house plants in my diningroom where i keep the sd's, and so that they would not freak over my cleaning, i put all of the trees around their tank. I also have not been using thier light barely at all lately since they are near a window, they get filtered light which seems to have calmed them down alot.

When I saw them playing, I thought it may have been due to stress since I had eliminated all other possiblilities. Which is another reason I moved many of my house trees and plants to block their tank. I guess all I can do now is to wait and see. I looked today and there are still a ton of spots, i read that they drop to the floor, so I am again not sure. The spots look very similar to tetra eggs, which I also have, but are about half the size. I guess only time will tell. I will keep you posted though. In a way I am hopeing that they are just something else as I do not really need to be overrun with them at the moment. Thanks again for your reply.

I also added a ton of new plants to their tank recently, but they came from my other tanks, and I dont have snails or anything in there, only tetras and this was before I noticed any eggs in their tanks. LOL

In a way I envy you. I would kind of like to have my Silvers have little ones. It would be SOOOOOOO cute. I remember when I got my 2 baby Silvers, they were only the size of NICKELS and next two my two half-full grown Silvers they were ADORABLE. I remember posting about it back then. Me and my husband were in Petco and I saw baby Silvers and I made this HIGH-PITCHED squeely scream and just about died. I had never seen anything SOOOOO cute in my WHOLE life . So, never having bought fish there before, I bought two. They are bigger than pop can tops now.

Wow silver i bet they are cute. I am still a bit in shock that I may soon be overwhelmed with fish that will grow out to 8 inches. If they do hatch out and survive i am just freaking about it. Right now I am at 11 tanks, and all full. I am trying to figure out who I can relocate in order to raise them. These sd's were rescues, their original owner had them in a 125 along with most of the tank inhabitants of my 55. He called my sisters vet office to see if they knew anyone who would take them as he was moving and was going to dump them in a lake if no one was going to take them.

Well I had never had any, but could not see that happening to them. He wanted me to also take the tank, for I forget how much $250 i think , but at the time i was short on cash. I do have a 20 ouside but one of the side pannels is cracked, so i will just have to keep looking.

All of the spots are still on the side of the tank, so I will keep you posted, and if i get any wigglers, i will be sure to start pics. In the process of searching out a digital. LOL

UPdate:

Most of the eggs are no longer on the glass, so I am guessing they have fallen. I looked with a flash light, but have not seen anthing moving as of yet. Will keep looking.

As for my Head and Tail lights (Beacons) I have swimmers, but way too small and quick to catch in there. I have a layer of marbles in there, hopefully they will be able to find some good hiding places in there or in the plants so that some make it. I have been trying to save some, but just cant seem to get ahold of them, since they are so small. They are doing a great job of hiding in the gravel.

I am going to call my lfs today and see what I can do about the sd's if they are indeed hatching and that is why i cant find most of the eggs.

Thanks silver, since you are in the states with me, I am in Louisiana, if they do hatch out and start swimming, i will mail them to you lol. Say about 200 to start!!!!!!!

Checked again tonight, but still no swimmers in the sd tank, but will keep you posted.

Sorry it has been a few days since my post, but with kids, life can get nuts really quick. I dont have any idea what is going on in their tank. I have been watching these spots, which are clear, and they have not hatched. I dont know, maybe they could be something else? Maybe they were just not fertilized? I am so at a loss as to what they are. They are very tiny clear spots attatched again to my glass, there are no snails in my house so that cant be it. I just am completely clueless as to what they may be. I cleaned the tank again today and scrubbed down the glass, but there are still all these spots in the tank. Do you have any ideas of what else could it be?

Well,
are they actual little balls?? I mean, like eggs? Or do you think they may just look that way and maybe they are flat? I'd check that out really close.

I know what you mean about the kids. Two is two too many sometimes I was sooo stressed out for so long it has been a half a year since I've been a regular poster.
