Is there a special type of silicon I should of used to make my sump? All I used was just some regular silicon you can get at the hardware store.

Will there be any problems with me using this? I can't see any reasons as to why it would not be safe to use.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks!

I used aquarium safe sealent on a couple of DIY reflectors i have made, as for the difference between that and the mainstream stuff i dont know but im pretty sure that you should only use aquarium safe stuff

if it is mildew resistant and it says its not sopossed to be fully submerged in water for long periods of time then the chemicals that make it mildew resistant will get into your water and potentially kill your fish, the best idea for silicone is to get the kind with little or no additives

Most silcone you buy from diy shop will have some sort of mildew addictive.

A tube of proper silcone for fish tanks is normally under £10. For the piece of mind i know what id choose.

Last tube i bought was £3.00. Ceresit Aquarium.

thing is, there is no such thing as "aquarium" specific silicone. the gear you buy(from an LFS), is just the same stuff you get from a DIY shop, repackaged. as long as it says "aquarium safe", it is. wherever you bought it, however much you pay.

dont get conned. buy your silicone from a boat/caravan or diy shop. its exactly the same stuff, probably better. as it will be fresher. (these shops sell way more silicone per week, than an LFS)
