Signature

I'm assuming you know how to edit your signature.

In the editor, there is an icon just underneath the one for adding smileys, which is an "Add Image" button. Enter the URL of the image, and there ya go. The image must be externally hosted, and we will delete any images that are too big. Have a look in the signature guidelines topics in the Welcome section for more guidance.

Wot she said.

You need to sign up to a web-based photo-sharing site, like Photobucket, or Flickr or Picasa. Follow their instructions for uploading a photo. Once done, there will be some codes near the photo - you want the one which says "URL" or similar.

Why doesn't this site just have an easier system where you can upload photos from your computer?

We do, but not for inclusion in signatures.

For a one-off photo within a post, we prefer people to upload direct to the site. But for signatures, where the photo is displayed all over the place, as is everyone else's, it puts a heck of a strain on the server.

I've posted a picture using photobucket but the url isn't working.

You need to choose the "HTML" link to copy and paste into the signature or yes, the Direct Link into the Add Image button.

I have worked out how to do it but the photo always ends up too big and ends up being an error. I have made it smaller than the size it says but still not working. Will have to keep persisting or change photo.
