Hi

I am hoping to get some quick help here please!!! I kept tropical fish many years ago and have just recently set up a new tank (approx 6 wks ago). I think I originally bought too many fish to start off with and for the first week had problems getting the ammonia levels down. So, I bought a larger tank (60ltrs) and transferred them. The levels then were fine. But, over the past 3 weeks I have what I believe to be Ich. For the first week I tried Malacite Green but, they were still getting worse and dying by the day. So, I tried Methalene Blue for a week but, with the same result. Last Wednesday I also, increased the temperature to 82 degrees, and added aquarium salt another 2 fish have died today and I can see I am going to loose more. I don't know what else to do? Please help

Tank size: 60L

There are some strains of ich hat are very resitant to meds now. Your only option is to clear everything out with a few big water changes and run some carbon and try another med. I used eSHa exit last time my fish had ich and it worked very well.

Incidentaly; are you sure your testing your water properly? It's vanishigly rare for any tank to have zero nitrate.

I now believe that the meds I have used have been giving false the readings Which, is why they were not recovering (I think)I thought the readings were odd!!!

I cleaned the filter, did a 50% water change last night and will do another 20% tonight and put the carbon back in.

The readings this morning were:

Ammonia still 0
Nitrite still 0
Nitrate now 25
GH now 125
KH now 50
PH now 6.8

So, getting towards something like normality I hope.

Thanks for your help

Try to stay away from cleaning the filter on a newly setup tank.....you need time for the beneficial bacteria to establish in there. Looks like you used fish to cycle the tank, and with no water change and only meds you are going to get a few casualties.

If that happens again, try using Rid-Ich with the raise in temp and salt. *make sure you following the 25% water changing directions on the bottle perfectly though* If you do not kill and get rid of the ich that is in the gravel it will come back as soon as fish show signs of stress. Also make sure you continue medication for 3 days after the fish are visually better. 3 days is the life span of ich so you want to make sure you kill the ich that have fallen into the gravel as well. Hope this helps!
