Sick, Stressed, Or Ugly?

no carbon on hand until tomorrow...hopefully not too late. But that brings an interesting point...Ive been running the same carbon for about two months...maybe three. Wouldnt you guys agree it's about time for it to be removed for fear of leeching excess nutrients back into the water?

Agreed. Carbon is something I wouldn't go without.

Is there any definitive proof either way of how useful carbon is in a marine system. It seems to be one of those things that people just dont agree on with opinions ranging from it causing more harm then good (leeching back what it absorbed in less then a few days) to being an essential peice of kit.
Unfortunately, that's the case with carbon... you either use it or you don't. There are plenty or reef tanks that are successful without it, and plently that are successful with it.

I also don't believe in mixing alleopathic soft corals with hard corals, because its too hard to control the warfare.
Sorry to double post, but I just noticed this; how come you can mention allelopaths with impunity, but I get met with a storm of either opposition or disbelief whenever I mention it? Not fair at all... you get all the breaks, man.

In my opinion carbon does not leech, but it will certainly have exhausted it's capacity for adsorption.

Nice to know! About to replace my carbon with phosban anyways.

On another note, my sun corals didnt open today when I tried feeding them...BUT my ricordia has almost doubled in size and today it pulled some venus fly trap action when I fed it. Clammed up around the food then settled down to a huuuge size. It was nifty indeed.

How is that one anyways? Been thinking of getting one.

Still alive, still messing around with the flow to see what it likes best.

Just to let everyone know, this is short term experiance/success, so dont take this as the bible of the yellow fiji leather

None of my hard corals are suffering with the adition of this large soft coral in a small tank. I got lps (torch, candycane, open brain) and sps (Digi, encrusting monti, some other un-ided ones) and jsut to add a few soft corals (two different types of xenia, zoanthids, palys, kenya tree, shroom, and yes, i know shrooms, zoas and palys dont really fall under corals but, its just easier this way)

my calcerous (however that is spelled) algaes are fine as well, halimedia is growing, coralline is still spreading, some green spots and purple spots)

No carbon, put there is some purigen that has been in there for about 3 month, still pretty white..... no idea if it is even working....

My leather is starting to look orange/yellow and fluffy...looks almost like an orange mold...it has a slight glow under blue lights. It's certainly looking better than when it was beige/black. Is this a good sign or a really bad one?
