Hi all,

I'm new to all this so I apologise if I am in the wrong place etc. I have a problem with one of my ryukins and have no idea what it could be. I really hope some one can help!

The fish in question has had a large lump on his lip for about 6 weeks now. I checked the water, which was fine, but I did a water change anyway. I introduced aquarium salt to 1% & treated him with Myxazin for a five day course. Three days in the lump began to shrink &, although it remained white, looked like it had entirely resolved. The fish became lively and seemed completely better. I introduced carbon into the filter a few days after treatment had finished. About three weeks later the lump started to grow again. I didn't immediately treat him & at first the fish wasn't bothered by it. Then it appeared to burst. It looked like a crater, but again the fish was seeminly unworried & it seemed to be healing. But recently it's looking blood shot and appears to be spreading, making his mouth look sore. He is still eating, but not so enthusiasticly as usual and he showed no interest at all in his weekly frozen blood worms.

I have two Ryukins in 90litres with two underwater filters, the water conditions are all ideal and the other fish is entirely unaffected. There have been no other symptoms. I generally change the water every week but only do a big (60 - 70%) change once a fortnight. Since the first incident I have left the water salted as I am soon to move home and it has always reduced stress before, I plan to phase it back out eventually though. Their diet consists of Frozen blood worms, peas and other veg and sinking pellets, all in strict moderation. I am aware that the tank is a bit small for the two of them, after my move next week I will set up and cycle their new 200l corner tank which should be far more appropriate.

I would be so grateful if someone could give me an idea of what may be causing this, and, if possible, what could help him.

Many thanks

J

it sounds like either a bacterial ulcer has developed and burst
or dermocystidium which is rare http://www.fishdoc.co.uk/disease/dermocystidium.htm

I was leaning towards cotton mouth, have no idea! Either way, I treated a again with the myaxin and increased the aquarium salt to 2% and he's like a new fish! Unless you knew he had something wrong with his lip you wouldn't spot it and he's got more energy than his tank mate, wolfing down the lion's share of blood worms tonight! I'm so pleased, I love my fatties!

Fingers crossed the stress of tomorrows move doesn't set him back. I'm going to keep the water salted for quite sometime, it really seems to do them both good. Murk's on the mend and Harry's managed an almighty growth spurt over the last month or so!
