I have a 40G freshwater. I added my fish to it about two weeks ago. I didn't notice anything unusual and the fish seemed to be doing well. Just today I check the tank and my red oscar appears very sick. I've done an exhaustive search on fish diseases but can't find anything that looks exactly like what the oscar has.

The oscar is acting sick as in it swims at an angle. It doesn't appear to be near death yet so I'm hoping I can still save it.

On it's sides some of its scales appear gray or white (not cottony or puffed) and they are pealing or falling off. The largest of the scales damage is near one of it's gills.

It's fins are also appearing discolored and are torn or ripped. The two front fins are the worst.

That's about all I can notice though. I'm NOT seeing any distinctive white spots, no cloudy milky fungus attachments, no black spots, no hole in head, just the stuff with the fins and scales.

I have three more fish in the tank and they all appear to be healthy.

Details? what are your water parameters for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate? Did you cycle the tank first before adding these fish? What are the other fish? Are they at the surface alot or near the bottom alot?

Josh,

Check out "Is he special or is he sick". Watch near the end. My fish there did have small scales dark, but nothing out of the ordinary. He listed to the side for about a month. Near the end observe his behavior. He listed to one side as he swam for about 3 weeks and then yesterday I filmed that video you will be watching. This morning he moved to the fish tank in the sky! :(

But yes, there was no information I was able to find on his symptons at all. All chemistry is right on too! I have 5 others that are fine. So I am not sure what to tell ya. Perhaps watch that video. Whatever it is, if its the same symptons, got my fish too! :(

Let me know!

We had the same problem with our 55g community aquarium. It happened with our loaches first though. We battled that for over a week and lost 9 fish to it so far. Sure wish I knew what it was. I think I got it due to our tanks crashing and us having to move them really fast.

Ok I got some more information. Go to link below to see pictures of the sick fish and the others in the tank. Can anyone tell what it has? I had to put it on another page because the images are really big, sorry.

Here are the chemical levels:
PH 7.2
Ammonia 2.5 ppm
Nitrite 2-3 ppm
Nitrate 15 ppm

The tank is 2 weeks old.

first, You need to do an immediate 50% water change to get those levels down. the ammonia should not get much above 1ppm when cycling with fish. Keep doing water changes daily until the level is down where it is manageable. These levels could easily bring on these symptoms in your fish. Once you get the levels down then do water chnages when necessary to keep the levels below 1. HTH :)
