Sick Black Ghost Knife Fish And Kribensis

Just thought i would give you an update. The ghost fish is looking better and is swimming around. I think he just wanted some peace. The krib is still poorly but is holding in there. The bloke at the lfs said it sounds like an internal infection. Is there anything we can give him that wont hurt the bgkf.

We have quarantined the knife fish and the kribensis together in a 3ft tank. We have taken our water down to the pet shop for them to test, they say the amonia and nitrite are 0, but the nitrates are 160, so that is our problem. We have done a 50% water change on both tanks. How often will we need to do this until the levels will come down.
I would do daily water changes for a few days and then take another sample to the store and see how its looking then, ,

we are going to keep the knife fish in the quarantine tank once he is better as we are sure he was being attacked by the gold gourami and the african knife fish, if we put him back the same thing will happen again.
knifes do get pretty big eventually and a 5 foot tank+ is the only option for these guys long term,
what are the dimensions of the 3foot tank?

Will he be ok on his own in that tank or should we buy a shoal of fish like danios to keep the levels right.
keep him on his own, adding more fish will do quite the opposite of keeping the levels right, more waste will contribute to more toxins in the tank and therefore a longer period of water changing and monitoring.

Thankyou so much for your reply davo86. The 3ft tank is 3ft x 2ft x 2ft. The only other tank we have is the one he was in which is 4ft x 2ft x 2ft which is about 60gallon. I love this fish but cant afford another tank, if the 3ft one is too small for him then when he is better he will have to go back in the 4ft.

Ok will do daily water changes and see how the readings are at the weekend, and no more fish lol

Your very welcome,

a 4x2x2 holds 120USG and a 3x2x2 holds 90USG, however;

As the 90G has a good height and more importantly width, I would keep him in there, BGK's are quite slow growers so it will be a year or more before the tank size really becomes an issue, Provided the filtration is good, once the water problems have been resolved I would add maybe one more centrepiece fish such as a gold Severum to the tank just to give you something else to look at when the BGK is hiding (although mine is more often than not out and about in my tank)

should get some kits of ur own soon. lfs's arent accurate compared to ur home test kits.

hope the bgk and krib is doin alrite..

Hi

Thought i would update you all. both the krib and the black ghost are doing better. I think they just needed time away from the other fish. I have moved the other krib into that tank aswell as they were missing each other and they all seem to be doing fine. So fingers crossed. I have bought a liuid test kit of my own to keep an eye on the levels. The nitrate levels are starting to come down. we have bought a lab series nitrate thingy so hopefully that will help.

Thankyou to everyone for your help, it was much appreiated. The fish say thankyou too

how can he be so shredded! i have one but hes shredde only a inch. poor thing. if you send some clearer images then i can definitely diagnose him!
