Sick Betta

He just wasn't getting any better, and it was clear that he was really sick and suffering. He wasn't moving, and wouldn't eat, and everytime I tranferred him to the salt bath he was clearly in pain during the transfer. I euthanized him about 10 minutes ago. I'm going to miss him alot, but at least he's not suffering anymore. :-( I just seem to have bad luck with fish, 2 bettas and both died prematurely.

RIP Starbright :byebye:

You did the right thing for him, though, and he suffers no more.

If you belong to a local fish forum and are looking only for pet stock, you might think about getting one from another forum member who has been shown to produce healthy fish.
Apart from avoiding the constant coming and going of potential carriers that occurs in pet stores, people raising their own may be more likely to notice and deal with illness before a sick fish winds up in your tank.
There are so many illnesses being passed through pet stores nowadays...

I know that it was the right thing to do, I was a wreck while I was doing it, but once it was over and done, I was OK, because I knew he had been suffering, and now he wasn't.

I would love to go through private breeders, and have searched a couple times for anyone near either of my places of residence with very little success. I got both my betta's from big chain stores, and for my next one, I will probably go through a smaller aquatic shop if I find any that seem reputable.

Thanks for all the help and support. :flowers:

So sorry :rip:. That's the hardest part of being a fish owner. Maybe order online? And also, is there any way to sterilize the tank? For future inhabitants.

I've been poking around websites to see about ordering online, it's a definite possibility. Yes, I've been sterilizing the tanks and all of the equipment used since he passed yesterday, I'm doing my best to make sure all the little nasties are gone, if there are any left at this point than they're invincible, as I've been pouring scalding hot water with a minute trace of antimicrobial soap for the first wash in tanks and over things for about 14 hours. Every wash after the first has been soap free, and all soap residue is long gone.
