Hi my betta seems to have developed white spot. As least I think its white spot, one minute he's lying on the filter with his head nearly out of the water, next minute he's swimming round looking fine. I can see some white spots on him but some of them seem to disappear when he swims, almost like they are just tiny bubbles. He's also lost a bit of his colour. Can someone please tell me which is the best treatment for him that wont affect the amano shrimps that are in with him please. His water stats are all fine. He's in a 7gal tank with logs, silk plants and the shrimps. They've been together a while and take no notice of each other. I did try this tank filterless for a while but was advised to get a filter, which I did and cycled it with media taken from my sons tank.

How long have these spots been on the betta? Bubbles usually only stay on its body for 1 or 2 days. Did you just recently do a water change?

I just found him with his head completely out of the water and thought he was dead. When I went to net him he swam away! Anyway managed to gently net him and have a good look and it doesn't look like white spot. His gills are whitetish and his fin is a bit ragged with what I can only discribe as tiny bits of fluff hanging off it. Lost more colour as well, not looking good is it?

Hi sorry to bump this but I need to get to the pet store to help my betta 'Sam' but don't know which medication to get. Any help much appreciated.

It sounds like fungus so get medication that treats that. I'd treat him in a separate container though since fungus is not contageous. You'd also be able to use other medications that would otherwise be harmful to shimp.

Sorry I meant Prevent Ich which is organic. Rid Ich is not organic and is harmful to invertebrates like shrimp.

Thanks for that PaPeRo, I've put a diluted dose of Melafix in for now to help him. Will go to my lfs later today and see what they've got for fungus suitable for a betta. Thank you.

Sorry about the wrong information but Rid Ich is not safe for shrimp. Only Prevent Ich and Ich Attack are organic and safe for shrimp. Also Rid Ich WILL STAIN SILICONE blue/green so do use a separate container if you use Rid Ich.

Found poor Sam dead this morning!
Posted this question on the invertabrates page but no answer so far so I hope you don't mind me posting it here as well. Can I put the shrimps that were in my betta tank into my other community tank? Will I be spreading the infection or are shrimps not carriers of fish diseases? I really want to get this tank drained and cleaned. Thanks.
