ive just bought a female fighter for my male but he seems very protective over her..is this normal???

Take the female out. NOW. A male and female betta should not ever be together unless you are breeding. I hope you have a tank for that female....

If you don't act quick they may spawn and he may even kill her. Hurry up and separate them.

o_o Did you buy them on the same day? If so, your LFS needs a kick in the arse for not warning you about putting them together. The male isn't "protective," he's probably getting ready to ream her a new one. As everyone said, get her out and fast. She could harm him as well, and nothing is worse than two torn up fish getting all kinds of infections.

Once you have em split, try the Betta forum for info on the species. It will probably be very helpful for you and your fish will love you for it.

I highly doubt he's being protective. Chances are he's either threatening her or trying to breed with her.

Separate them. Now. If you don't, the male's going to tear her to pieces. The only time they should really be together is if they're going to breed. I highly doubt that's what you're aiming for.

And to clarify even further if you were putting them together to breed they can't be just tossed together or as everyone above has stated someone will be killed. Get one of them out of there asap
