Greetings, I am new to fishforums i have joined to seek fellow fish enthusiasts knowlege and passion.
I have a well establish cichlid community tank. I have had a siamese fighter living in the tank
chasing cichlids and even fighting other fish over his territory which is the left hand corner of the tank.
His fins remain relitively undamaged and he is doing fine health wise and is not stressed by the other fish
or the flowing water. The ladies at my loacal fish shop said siamese fighters usually cant even be put in peaceful
community tanks due to fin damage etc.

I would like to know if anyone has heard of this happenening before, or is this a crazy siamese fighter?

thanks for your help.

Just what these fish do in my opinion. Had mine doing the same for a couple of weeks until the other fish realised that space was his lol and continues to do it when i add more fish. My dwarf gourami's were the same.

What kind of cichlids are these? And how big are they? If this is the case I would think you have been very lucky in a sense to find an aggressive betta as that but be aware that it will only take one cichlid to grab hold of his fins and literally rip him especially if he is pushing his luck.

I have had this tank established with the siamese fighter in there for over 6 months. I have a varitey of medium to large cichlids. Convict cichlid, Pulpican, 2x dwarf cichlids, electric yellow small, red jewel medium size, eel tail catfish 15cm, silver perch small, blue peacock cichlid medium size, + catfish and bristlenoses etc.

It is amazing the only fish that isnt scared of the betta is the cynotilapia pulpican. My tank is 120cm and is 200L

guessing the convicts and jewel are small or they wouldn't put up with that mate

hate to say this but I vote troll - there is no way a betta could fight off a jewel and convicts and a mix of africans

ill film it. granted the cichlids arent big but they just flee when the siamese comes darting through. some are over double as large as the siamese. i knew this was rare.

I'm just amazed you've got all those varieties of cichlids (plus other fish) in a 4ft tank! Cichlids are notoriously territorial. I think sooner or later (maybe as the fish grow in size) there will end up being problems for you. As for the betta, I think he's been a lucky boy so far! But all that stress from flaring and guarding his territory could wear down his immune system at some point.

Regards - Athena

I had to seperate Dwarf Cichlids and my Betta because my Betta was going insane at them. But Convicts? We are talking the fish that see's off Oscars here!

Deffo need a video! :good:

Must be VERY small cichlids or a huge betta.Jewels are mean killers even as 3cm fry and the convicts will have that betta for lunch,so I wouldn't worry about long term effects as the betta will be eaten long before he has a chance to suffer ill effects from stress.
Anyway, what's the question? This tank's owner obviously knows he's got a problem. Solution -get the betta out and put him in his own small tank -simples!

I have had male Bettas in with small size community fish and never had a problem but I never have thought about putting them in with a cichlid. Usually non aggressive fish are fine for Bettas. Also you can do a serority of female Bettas.
