i had a giant african filter (cameroon filter shrimp)(armoured filter shrimp)shrimp about two and a half inches long for about a year but escaped when i changed tanks and he managed to get though a gap, at least i think thats what happend i have never seen the body. i replaced him with a much smaller one about an inch or so but he is very shy and i rarely see it, i know they are shy but does anyone know if they come out more when they age

i have had shrimp for about 5 months and mine at first never came out and were boring but as you feed them and see them more they'll come out more and watch they dnt escape! mine did by climbing up the wire and out into the kitchen and no one found him untill about 2 weeks ago!!!
just feed it and wait...

The more of them you have the more they will be out and about, i have 5 now and they are quite social little things, following each other around.

I have an armoured shrimp, very nice shrimp although they are very shy by nature, they often jam themselves into protected areas like a heap of rocks. Armoured shrimp do best in tanks that have been mature for at least 6months as they depend on little micro creatures living in the tank to feed on which are usually only in bigger enough quantitys to sustain themselves on in mature tanks- you can also temporarily feed them off liquid or fine powdered fry foods, they do not eat algae wafers or sinking pelets at all though.
Its totally natural if you aern't seeing your shrimp exploring the tank as once they find a good protected space they can jam themselves into with a good current they tend to stay there- you can work around this by making good shrimp hidouts in your tank that you can see into to try and encourage the shrimp to move into.
I've seen amoured shrimp up to 5inchs long, so yours and mine(mines only about 2inchs long), have a long way to go- they are slow growers, im getting some iodine supliment for my shrimp, it would probably be best if you get your shrimp some too if you havn't already as it helps them grow new shells when they molt, without enough of it they get white patchy areas on their shell and die.

Shrimp are awesome! I had 20 little critters and they would all move together. It was so cool!!!

thanks for all the info, i will use the iodine tip :) what colours have you all got, i can only find blue ones if i could find diffrent colours i would get a few more

Hi Robbo,

Take a look at this formore varieties http://www.shrimpcrabsandcrayfish.co.uk/Sh...p.htm~mainFrame i have 2 which look at lot like atyopsis spinipes which were labeled in my crappy garden centre LFS as prawns, and 3 which i think are atyopsis moluccensis which i bought as red mountain shrimp i paid £3.99 each for these and £4.99 for the others. I had a cameroon armoured shrimp but my clown loaches took a dislike to him and ate him. The other shrimp are in my cory tank now.

thanks for the info but i am aware of the diffrent types of shrimp i have 5 diffrent types of shrimp in various tanks, but my problem is that i cant find any fish shops that sell the cameroon armoured shrimp (giant african filter shrimp) in any other colour than blue, i would like a white pink or even black one but all i can find is the blue. if any1 knows of a shop in the east of england that sells diffrent colour g.a filter shrimp i would love to know where. :look:

I found my armoured shrimp in a really crappy garden centre so keep looking, my nearest fish place had never heard of them when i asked there.
