Hello

I have 3 Cories in a 72L tank. There was 4 but 1 died on Christmas Day :( . They seem to always hide, and not be very active. Sometimes I see one of them moving around but most of the time they just stay still. Its a bit dissapointing since sometimes before the the three of them would shoal around the tank, while the 4th would do its own thing, that cory was crazy.

When ever they hide they hide in the shade, so i'm not sure whether they just don't like the light or are shy. I don't really know if they are taking the pellets i dropped for them, since they hardly move. I assume they must be since they are still alive.

What do you think?

Thanks

Ok, Try luring them out with soime cumcumber or mussel or something like that,
Maybe your tank just dosen't need to be cleaned or maybe you should consider getting some more

What kind of cory are they? I think some are more shy than others.

When you put food in the tank, they should definately come out to feed. When I feed mine, they go crazy. They should actually be moving all over the tank because cories are always looking for food and will search for it. What other fish do you have in the tank? There might be something in the tank thats scaring them and has them nervous. Cories will stay in caves and hiding places if they are provided, but they should definately come out to feed some of the time.

Cool thanks for the help so far

The cories are Julii Cories. Their tank mates are:

6 Harlquin Rasboras
6 Lemon Tetras

I don't think they are scared of those because as far as i know they are quite peaceful fish. But yes when I feed them they don't do anything. Except when i lift the lid of the tank sometimes one or two of them will zoom round really fast then stop and stay still.

Thanks

I have 2 albino, 2 bronze, and 2 julii cories. My albinos whizz around everywhere, and the bronze must be happy, because in around a week and a half they have laid around 270 eggs in total. :S. Anyway, the julii's seem to be the LESS (which doesnt mean not at all) active. They tend to stick with each other, scavenging for food. They will come out to eat when i feed, and everything else. It may just be that they are younger than the bronze and albinos. They seem smaller. Maybe you could just give them a little while to settle, and if they still seem scared/frightened etc. Add a couple more if tank stocking allows.

Yea, its most likely not the tank mates. I have Harlquin Rasboras with mine. You might just need to add a couple more to make them feel more comfortable, just make sure you have enough room in the tank for them. Your main concern right now is to make sure they are eating. You might want to drop some sinking wafers in there at night when you turn the light off. What exactly are you feeding them?

Thanks everyone,

I am feeding the cories Catfish pellets that come ina tub. I would add more cories but I also want to add some/a dwarf gourmi.

Thanks

I would add more cories but I also want to add some/a dwarf gourmi.

I would get 1 Male and 2 Female Dwarf Gourami, rather than a pair (a lone female will get major hassle/stress from the male)... 3 will take your tank to near stock limit...

So do people think that the reason the cories don't do much is becasue there's not enough of them? If so someone said i could add just one male gourmi, could i then add more cories. If so how many more do you think? The tanks filtration is much more than there is needed, if that makes any difference.

thanks

Hi Gnatfish :)

Like people, some corys are more active and outgoing than others. C. jullis or C. trilineatus (which are often sold as jullis) do tend to be a bit on the shy side compared to say, C. aeneus, bronze or albino.

http://www.scotcat.com/factsheets/c_trilineatus.htm

I've often found that if you add some of the more active corys to a tank of shy ones, they will seem to relax and come out more often.

I'm not sure about the sizes of your tetras, so I can't comment about that, but I will add that if you are going to be running a tank with a full stock of fish, please be sure to do bigger than normal water changes and frequent bottom vacuuming. This is because bacteria don't show up on water tests, yet you will want to keep their numbers down, especially for the well being of the corys who live on the bottom, which is where the dirt goes. :D

Hi Gnatfish :)

You could even do bigger water changes than that, if you need to to get the bottom clean. Do you have sand or gravel? If gravel, could it be big enough that the corys are uncomfortable on it?

BTW, did you figure out why your cory died and are you sure your other corys are in good health?

Hello

I have gravel on the bottom, it is quite small and rounded. No i haven't yet found out why the other cory died, the water levels were fine.
