I just recieve a PM by Big C, and he has brineshrimp, he said that they are a form of food, but i thought they were going to live in the tank.
Are ghost shrimp different, or will they be a form of food too?

I have around 12 shrimp in my 180ltr at the moment

9 of them are Amano shrimps, 2 are some other type that I'm not sure of, similar to Amanos.

I also have one other who is the same size as the Amanos but has long thin pincers. He's a real character and even chases the Zebra loaches away from his food. He has also been known to gesticulate at my male krib. Its comical, and he loves bloodworm.

There is actually a good supplier of shrimp near you in Yorkshire, can't remember where exactly but if you give Aquascope in Blackburn a ring and ask to speak to the guy that looks after the discus he will tell you. They are a tropical plant seller.

They will just scavenge for uneaten food, you dont have to give them anything special, mine eat all sorts of things, just feed your fish as normal.

I like the shrimps too... gonna get me a few :p

I bought some red claw crabs too, but as I`m a noob I was naive to how to care for them properly...there really cool... when i get a bit more knowledgable i`ll get more.

good luck shrimp hunting :)

For the most part, shrimp will work with most non-aggressive fish such as tetras, danios, corys, rasboras, etc. Ghost shrimp are scavengers like corys. They will eat anything they can find from leftover food to dead fish. Amano shrimp (and other algae eating shrimp) will eat the same things as ghost shrimp but will also eat some types of algae. Most all shrimp (except the giant shrimp and prawns) are great in a community tank and don't create much of a bio-load so unless you add a very large number, they really don't affect your stocking level.

Be very careful with mixing any type crabs (or crayfish or lobsters) and small fish. Crabs are predators and will eat small fish. They will lay in wait aftr the lights go off for a small fish to come by and the rest as they say is history. You will slowly begin to notice that you have fewer and fewer fish.

Yep, I learnt that the hard way too :p

I stupidly put a few small loach in the tank too... thought they would be way too fast for the crabs. I guess I didnt take into account the nocturnal habits of some of these guys !! I awoke one morning to find a red claw grasping a half eaten loach.

Lesson learnt :-(

Amanos are good algae eaters. He should keep your tank relatively clean.

Edit: $2.50 is actually a very good price on them. I paid $3.99 for mine.
Edit 2: I just realized you said L2.50 which I guess is very close to the $3.99 I paid.

What do you feed shrimp?

They feed off the algae and waste in the tank. They are basically scavengers so will eat anything. They also are quick to come up and grab pellets, flakes, worms. Its fun to watch when they grab food between their feet and scuttle off to a corner to eat it.

Brineshrimp are tiny critters (less than 1mm). Ghost shrimp are a lot bigger :) But yes, they will be treated as food by bigger fish!!

lol, thanks, i just thought they were the normal size shrimp.... And yea, i've notice him picking up all the small parts off food the on the bottom and the way they eat is so cool.

do they taste good?
I mean, can you eat them?
