Hey all,

I was thinking about getting some shrimp, but i dont know alot about them. Is there any shrimp that are larger than an inch or two that would be ok with corys and sand?

Cheers

Kev

hi there, it was suggested to me that I could have amano shrimp with cories, a Betta and some African Dwarf frogs. They don't count towards stocking quantities either. They are good as a clean up crew in planted tanks.

HTH
:D

BTW, where abouts in Scotland are you? I live in Orkney! Oh, and we've got the same birthday too, but i'm 1981

Lol, im from Peterhead, just north of aberdeen. My girlfriend has a few amano shrimp but i was looking for something a little bigger because i would never see them in my tank.

ah, in that case can't help. They're the only shrimp I know about lol  ! I got my tank from A1 Aquatics on constitution st in aberdeen, ever been there?

bamboo shrimp. decent size......wouldnt put more than one in a 10gal for example. nice dark color.......from light tan to bright cherry red. i love em.

How big will they get, are they ok with corys and sand, how many could i get in a 45gallon tank?

Hi,

Depending which type you get they usually get between 4-6 inches. I have 5 in my 180 litre tank no probs with corys and amano shrimp.

My Amano shrimps are very elusive and shy creatures. They are also small and "spooky".
So if you want shrimp to clean some algae but don't mind not ever seeing them, then they're fine.

If you want a beautiful looking shrimp, I say go for a bamboo shrimp. Very entertaining to watch.
Edit: I think I paid approx £7 for mine (ouch, but worth it).

Here's mine ! (bamboo first, then Amano)

Thanks :D just one bamboo (and that really isn't even his best shot - he's now also got a beautiful bright white stripe down his back).

I bought about 10 amano, but I hardly ever see any - that was a lucky shot :/

They are all in the same tank with cories and all live happily together.

If i can find someone who sells shrimp will aim for a bamboo shrimp :D we had alot of trouble trying to get a hold of a few ghost/armano shrimp for my girlfriend. We aint sure what we got... two was pure white and had big black round eyes and the other one is clear and has like brown eyes. They are all kick ass tho. when she puts in frozen bloodworm one swims to the top of the tank for some, all his little legs kicking lol really funny.

Then you should see a bamboo for amusement ! Mine sometimes folds his little wavy hand together (in a diving action) and then peddles like there's no tomorrow to cruise to the other side of the tank. So funny to watch !
Ghost shrimp are not Amano shrimp though. This is ghost shrimp (Callianassa californiensis) and this is Amano shrimp (Caridina japonica).

Hi,

I paid £3.99 each for 3 of my bamboo shrimp and £4.99 each for the other 2. The cheaper ones were a lot smaller when i got them but now 4 are all the same size and one has stayed small. One of them was carrying eggs a few weeks ago but they've gone now and i haven't seen any little un's. I will have to read up on breeding them incase they have more eggs in future.
