I would go for inert sand for the substrate and easy plants. If you do decide on an HOB filter you need to make sure the intake won't suck in shrimplets - you can us a piece of stocking or similar to prevent this.
You don't have to worry about neos breeding out of control - the population will grow to what the tank can sustain.
Personally I do feed mine, just good quality fish food - but they don't need much.

Oh and make sure you only get one colour / type - otherwise in a few months you will end up with a tank full of brown shrimp.

easy plants

What would you suggest? I want to try floaters and planted plants, with sand then I guess I would need root tabs and ferts.

Personally I do feed mine, just good quality fish food - but they don't need much

Also, I picked up some rock on the Superstitions when I went hiking there. Is that safe to use? Apparently, according to Google, it’s welded tuff and a mix of granite, dacite, basalt, and some conglomerate.

To add to this- the rock is safe to use! I tested it with vinegar.
I also got the filter! I’m making a journal about this tomorrow, hopefully.

That vinegar test gave me a false negative. I placed the stone in the tank and pH soared. There was a post recently that recommended a certain acid rather than vinegar but I can’t remember the name. Sorry.

Vinegar is not only a weak acid, it is also dilute. Strong acids are corrosive so it may be more difficult to buy them. However, API nitrate test bottle #1 contains hydrochloric acid, one of the strong acids, so keep any expired nitrate #1 for using to test rocks. Or sacrifice a current one.






[The words 'strong' and 'weak' have a specific meaning when applied to acids. They're not the same as concentrated and dilute.]
