hi, my LFS sells feeder shrimp for about 10-20P each. what shrimp are these arnd do they normally come with diseases? as i want my tank to cycle a bit faster but i am begginning to get algae, and im hoping these will be a cheap way of doing this.

They'll die if you put them in a cycling tank.

They're likely either Palaemonetes sp. or Macrobrachium sp.; I can't give you a better ID unless you describe them in more detail or get a photo. :good:

Your in the UK, so they are a brackish species of shrimp that prefer cooler water, cant remember the species, and it took a bit of digging up when I looked at last time.

Bottom line is that they don't do well in freshwater tropical set ups at all and will live a few months maximum, though they usually only live a week or two.

They aren't good algae eaters anyway.

Thats the saltwater ones which grow to around 7 inches if left but they are normally sold around 1 cm juvies.

7 inches seems pretty big.

Found the species in a post by nmonks, Palaemon elegans and Palaemon serratus are the feeder shrimp you can buy in the UK.

I have seen big ones kept in coldwater marine aquariums, not nearly 7 inches though, linky?

How strange didn't work for me either however it does work with a new tab in firefox and IE8 anyway its http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/3...imp.html?cat=53 article 386973 on what are feeder shrimp
Well, that's not a wholly useful article...;).

It's from the US, so will be talking about different species, given what the author has said about temperature and the size of shrimp, I think it's safe to assume she's talking about a Macrobrachium sp. :good:.

right, if you hadnt already guessed they are clear, translucent shrinp, and are sold as feeders.

right, i might do a fish in cycle i think as i cant get to a boots to get some liquid ammonia. i might have a look on fleebay though.

Full marine/brackish shrimp. Not suited to a tropical freshwater set up, don't buy them.

Don't you already have a fish tank? Just clone the filter.

i have already put some media in from an old juwel filter, (the sponges were in an external already) but its only a small amount.
