Hi all,

We got our first fish yesterday - 3 platys in a Biorb which has been set up for a week. This evening one of the fish has been looking a little flat and been hiding at the bottom of the tank. We fed tham yesterday and were advised to feed alternate days to begin with. Should we be concerned? After reading the boards I have ordered some test kits to keep an eye on the water but don't have them yet.

Any advice would be welcome.

Welcome to TFF,
Going by your post it looks like you have not cycled your Biorbs filteration. When we say cycled, we meen building up enough bacteria to take care of the ammonia/nitrite that becomes present in the water. Ammonia and nitrite are toxic to are fishy friends, bacterias will mature over time to take care of these toxins which can take up to 4-8 weeks to colonise. At the moment i would take the advice Biffster gave you and look in the resource centre for beginners. Assuming that you have not cycled yet and that you have already bought fish i would be inclined to look at the fish-in-cycle topic. Well done for coming here your in good hands, there are many experienced members on the forum who are willing to help when you require it.

Thanks for that. I will get some test kits tomorrow. It mentions water changes if ammonia and nitrite levels are high. Should I do this tonight to be on the safe side or would this not help? I do have dechlorinator.

Claire

Yes i would do a large waterchange tonight, its more than likely you have harmful ammonia/nitrite in the tank.

Once you get your liquid test kit, come back with the results and we can help more :)

yes but match the temp of the water
so the water that goes in is as same as
the water that comes out that way it less
stressful to the fish treat the water with
the dechlorinator before you put it in the tank

Thanks guys. When you say large..... how large? Tank is 30l

It won't hurt, 50-75% water change with water that is of matching temp to within a degree or two. Its best to mix boiled water from a kettle to bring your cold tap water up to temp.

You need to change at least 50% of the water to get the ammonia & nitrites down. Dont feel to guilty about not knowing the tank cycle stuff, i didnt either.

Have you cycled the tank?

sigh, its obvious that they havnt, thats why people post here for help, the rolleyes emote realy doesnt help someone that only wants advice.

i dont realy understand why you would post in that way
