Should I Start With New Filter

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum and I'm sure someone will be able to help with my question.I have just bought a tank from my sister who's had it for about a year.It's a juwel 180.I've had the tank stood empty for a week and have just started to clean it and set it up.Do I need to start with new filter medium or will the one that is in be ok.I took it out and it's still wet but wondered if the filter would still be effective or would the bacteria be dead and need replacing.Hope someone can help,thanks

the bacteria will be dead by what you have described, so a fish less cycle is in order to get your bacteria up and running before putting fish in
