Should I get a gourami?

My first tank with poor advice from a pet store worker was a 10 gallon with the filter running for 1 week and 3 Blood Parrot Cichlids. After a little bit I figured out how wrong that information was and immediately gave the cichlids to a more trust worthy fish store. I now use that 10 gallon as a Cory and molly fry tank.

Just yesterday a fish store employee told me I could get a crayfish for my 29 gallon with cories and livebearers. I did not take this advice thankfully.

I wish you the best of luck with your tank @RenC

My first tank was a 20 gallon that was running for 1 day before adding fish
I had 1 gloskirt, 1 blushing tetra, 1 corydoras, 3 adfs, 3 neons and ghost shrimp and an angelfish. Definitely not the best setup

Thank you! I hope it goes well and jeez some people really don’t know much (not that I do haha)

Lol mine was a 3.5 gallon running for a day too with 4 guppies and an otto. Somehow they all survived (idk how) until otto came down with ich 4 months later in my bigger tank ): wow seems like everyone has horror stories, I do appreciate you all being so helpful I’d be lost without you all

We have all the been there. I was told run the filter on our 10g for a week, then add fish.

A sailfin molly, a rubber lip pleco, a betta, and a dwarf gourami were our first fish in that uncycled tank. We learned the hard way as well. We no longer have the betta or the pleco. The pleco was a victim of the uneducated decision to listen to the petstore worker. The betta died of dropsy within a few months. We also lost harlequin rasboras as well which the store sold us after the pleco!

We all want you to have the best success, so much of what we say is based off of our own heartache.
I understand and truly appreciate it :) I listened to PetSmart and but 4 guppies and an otto in a 3.5 uncycled tank (idk why they said it was okay) luckily didn’t lose any until my recent bout of ich in my 15 gallon I’m very lucky to have not killed them all ): hopefully no more heartache for me

2 female and 1 male honey Gourami would be a great fit, but they are hard to sex when they are juvenile.

Natural coloured honeys are reasonably easy; yellow are harder but do-able. But I find the red variety impossible even when they are fully grown.

And the reds are hybrids with thick lip gouramis, which can make them be more aggressive since thick lips are pretty nasty

I’m thinking about that since my female betta is already being a meany, I have a nice 3.5 gallon for her if she doesn’t chillax. I was also thinking of just getting a lyretail Molly for my centerpiece fish if miss betta can’t play nice

A sword tail might be nice too. I don't know if they need to be kept in groups though.

I have a very similar set up 15 gallon with 5 guppies, 2 honey Gouramis (wanting one or two more) Amano shrimp and planning on getting a few ottos not had any issues with the guppies and honey Gouramis

I couldn’t find them anywhere ): all sold out at every store near me

Id not do any molly or sword tail. They get way too large. They require a 30 gallon or larger. Swordtails can reach 6 inches long, and mollies can get 3-5 inches. Both species have very high bioloads as well.

I’m good with what I have right now :) I don’t want to add anymore fish and risk overstocking and such
