Hello, I’ve had my 43gal freshwater community tank for a couple years now and I was wondering if it would be a good idea to add a beta to the mix. Currently the tank only has 7 red eye tetras and 3 Corydoras as the stock so I’m looking for a centerpiece fish who is colorful and has some good personality. The tank is live planted with plenty spots to hide away as you can see below. Is it a good idea to consider adding a beta or is this a no go as I’ve never tried this before.

A female bettas are ok but males are not. I had a group of female bettas in my community tank with tetras and Cory’s. Perhaps a small gourami instead of a beta?
I’ve had gouramis before and I love them but I’m debating doing something different for some more experience.

Well to answer your question, bettas are called Siamese fighting fish for a reason. I have heard it’s possible, but I would STRONGLY recommend to not do it. An interesting fish species is something like a hatchetfish, though they need a school. Don’t quote me on this because I am a little rusty, but Apistogramma species might be an option.

Ok thank you I will
Look into that and do some research on Apistogrammas and female betas and see what is the best option for me to move forward!
