Shoaling Fish Options

Just about to start fishless cycle on my 100 litre tank. Dimensions - 31"x16.5"x11.5". Looking for a shoal of same species fish as opposed to a mixed bag. Any ideas on something colourful?

I was thinking tiger barbs. How many of these could go into my tank?

What other fish are you going to have?
Barbs can be nippy little blighters.
If you're only going to have the barbs, I'd say around 12 would be a good number.
Didn't you ask the same question about tiger barbs a week or so ago?

Why not go with Rummynose Tetra..? A fantastic fish to watch and one of only very few Tetra that tend to 'shoal' together.

A nice big shoal of ember tetra, a shoal of lemon tetra or maybe black phantom tetra

Yes a really nice fish, could have a nice big shoal..which would look great

Never heard of ember tetra they sound interesting!

Cardinal tetra - always (much better than neons and look great shoaling against a dark background!).

How many of these small shoaling fish would I be looking at for my size tank?

Celestial pearl Danio would also look stunning in a large shoal, again being small you could have quite a large number of them.
They do need a heavily planted tank though as they're quite shy, the more hiding places you have the more they feel comfortable.
Good lighting also shows off their colour well.
I have 12 of them, very entertaining little fish

I think you could have 20 ish embers, maybe a few more in your tank, the Cpd,s probably 25 ish

tbh it depends on what else you want to keep in there with them.

There's another something to think about that struck me this morning (as I was acclimatizing my new new emerald rasboras!); from how far away will you normally be viewing the tank?

If you're going to be looking at it from the other side of the room, you might want to go for bigger fish, like the five banded barbs.

If the tank is right next to your favourite armchair, tiny fish that need to be seen close up to really appreciate them would come into their own.

Good point flutter mouth I never thought of that. The tank is going to sit in a recess in the kitchen so viewing will not be close up. Slightly bigger fish it is then
