I don't see a problem with the shipwreck if it is what you want. I lean toward the more natural look...or REALLY cool sunken ruins. I love sunken ruins. :hyper:

Of course, if you wanted a REALISTIC looking tank, you could use a couple of beer cans and/or bottles, half a tire, rusty chain, etc  :/

I've actually given this idea some consideration in the past. Kind of an opportunity to make a environmental point to people that view my tank. One man made object that I think would work nicely actually is a small boat anchor. You'd have to ensure it was aquarium safe (no chemical issues, no sharp bits, etc.), but otherwise, I think it would be interesting.

Other human objects that would be "natural" and either funny or poingnant:

a ring of keys (seen it happen. d'oh!)
old weathered plank sticking out of the substrate
old license plate
stage jewelery (for that "Titanic" moment)
fake skeletal hand (for those whose taste runs towards the morbid)
part of a fishing rod (irony?)

Again, I'd never put anything in a tank that I wasn't REALLY sure was safe.

All that said, I currently have a tank full of 250lbs of rocks, so who am I kidding? ;)

I like shipwrecks myself, so i would recommend it for people, it really depends on what type of tank you have. If the shipwreck would go with the theme, then great. If it dosn't go with the theme, just don't use it.

personally no (would look a bit daft with all the plants) but i've seen some very impressive wrecks in the LFS (sunken gallion type things) the top end ones would look awesome in the right tank and the fish would love it.

I don't want one for my tank but I see nothing wrong with them. Some of them are really nicely detailed and look really good, especially with plants and whatnot around them. In the past I had an ancient city, like what you would expect Atlantis to look like, in a sand substrate and it was pretty cool. I got tired of it though and went to rocks and driftwood with a few fake plants (cichlids think real ones are an all you can eat buffet).

It's your tank, you should decorate it to fit your likes and dislikes.

I think that if its done right, a shipwreck (or any type of "ruins") in a tank can look pretty nice. Its all in the setup, but also how big the ship is in comparison to the tank. I know someone one here had one in her SW setup, which seemed appropriate to me. And I believe it was a larger, multi-unit one like you're talking about. Gave her tank a more ocean floor look. I've also seen some nice smaller shipwrecks in tanks, and like I said, if they're done right (not just plunked down in the middle with nothign around them), then they look pretty good. Beats a fishing village with trees and people walking around........... (the's one I've never understood). If you know you can make it look good, and you know your fish will love it, then go for it.

well i wouldnt have one because my biggest tank is 3ft and if thats 3ft it would look ................er...............weird ;)

OK I couldn't resist it any longer, so I brought it home today.
I proberbly won't have time to sink it untill tuesday next week
but for now here is some pics.

I think it's great! I would like one of those. I live very close to Lake Champlain which is a historic lake due to the battle between America and the (very superior) British fleet in 1776 -- consequently there are sunken ships in the lake!

I would like to take SCUBA lessons so I could dive down and see them myself! (parts of the lake are over 400 feet deep...)

Anyway, for me, a sunken ship would be very relevant and very natural based on my surroundings!

Can't wait to see pics when you have it setup.

Okaaaay....cityscapes with LED lights....AGH!

Um back to shipwrecks....depends on how plastic and fake it looked eh? Yours I think is GORGEOUS! Such atmosphere to it and it's not even in the tank yet. Nicely made ones are such superb hidey holes for more timid and territorial fish. My niece has a small sunken tugboat and there's often a "fight" as to who gets to hide in it :D ....of course now she's put a HUGE multi-tiered castle in there too....and yes, its a big tank so it looks way cool...end result....ALL the fish have tons of places to hide and swim through. They love it. I think the castle was worth the $100.

Me, I'm into live plants, river rocks, small amounts of gravel...and a small cave of river rocks my daughter glued together with silicone that the cories just LOVE. After seeing that fish going bananas over the bubbling treasure chest in the aquarium in Finding Nemo I look very dubiously at anything garish and animated. Besides we're here to see our gorgeous fish eh?

MAM, a fishing village with trees and people walking around? Must have been Atlantis!c

Thats a nice looking ship!! I believe that is the same one I was talking about before expect bigger :D

Its a nice ship but you can tell that the paint will eventually chip off.
