I recently bought a female platty (a week ago today) to go with my male and other female, and she was obviously already pregnant. I *think* she has squared off today. How long is it for plattys when they square off before they begin to drop their fry?

Heres my pretty girl Zola

I am debating on putting her in a homemade breeder trap. I have an enormous fantail goldfish that keeps eatting all of my Molly fry. And, just once, I want to save a few babies!

Honestly she doesnt look squared off to me, I just had a platy drop last week, I caught her when she was squared and she gave birth within 4 hours.

Yeah, i agree with coyemuse. She has a tiny bit more to go. Looks like it will be a huge batch!

She is GINORMOUS! Looks like I will be having Molly and Platy fry at the same time! YIKES!

Don't put her in the breeding trap if you can help it. Let the female give birth and the net up all the fry you can/want to save. Putting her in a breeding trap will just stress her out.

That is what I have been doing with my Molly. But she has dropped 3 times so far (soon to be 4th time) and I have yet to find a single fry. I have a 4-5inch fantail goldfish in there, and I think its eatting the fry. It will litteraly follow my Molly around hanging out around her bottom when shes close to dropping.

I DO have a seperate 1g tank I was going to use as a nursery "when" I can find some living fry! I thought about moving my fantail, but the 1g tank will be way too small. :(

I made a breeder trap and she swam into it. But 15 mins into her being in, I could tell she was super depressed (just layed at the bottom under the little plant), so I let her go back into the tank. Shes swimming around the big tank a little and then hiding in the plants, and then swimming around.

So I guess, I just have to hope and pray I find some fry this time before the giant fantail eats them all!
