Shall I Euthanize My Fish?

Does the fish need to be euthanized?

Hmmm, very sorry for your loss mate.

OK, humane euthanization info for others. Probably the best way is with a knife, many people are not happy to do this for obvious reasons.

If you are in this unfortunate position, isolate the fish into a small water filled container. Place the poor old fish in the freezer, this will ensure a quick and humane death. It also makes disposing of the fish easier, just place the frozen block into a zip lock bag on bin day, no smell to worry about.

How long does it take for the freezer to freeze the water? IMHO, it will take quite a few minutes for a even a small amount of water at 24ish Celsius to freeze.

That is a pretty terrible way to euthanize a fish, putting a cup of water in the freezer and taking it out when ice is beginning to form and then dropping the fish in it would be much better, but I still don't like that method, the severing of the spinal chord is always the quickest and most humane.

I think this method works very well. I've had to euthanize a couple fish and did this, and it was always instantaneous. Seems like it would take a longer but it really doesn't. But then again I don't euthanize until they are too far gone to save so maybe that's why

I put my gourami in a plastic bag and dropped a brick on her. Surely this is as instant and far less Al Pacino (and may I say slightly clinical/heartless) than cutting spines.

Good grief! :grr:

I personally would have the use the clove oil method. I couldnt bring myself to strike any of my animals, and although I work in a lab and dissect things all the time, I couldn't cut a live fish, even though I know it is the quickest way.
