Hi All, ok I am rubbish at sexing fish, I am pretty sure this is a female Green Terror and not a blue Acara, I bought it a while ago from a rubbish shop that has now closed,, they had it as a juvenile taking a battering in a Malawi tank! There is no obvious hump, however it is still a relatively young fish, Another decent fish store has a large batch of really good Green Terrors and I want to introduce a male as a breeding project, so it is important I am sure she is a female. please don't judge me on the bits in the water, these were taken at feeding time.

The small fin damage were where it has been scrapping with a pair of Jewels who have now been moved into their own tank

It's not a Green Terror lol. It's a Gold Saum :) True Green Terror's are very rare in the hobby. And it does look female but it depends on the age and size of the fish. If it's a male over 6 inches it should have a hump but they are all different :)

I have thought all along it is a Gold Saum , but was told today that Green Terrors and Gold Saums are 2 and the same, another poor piece of advice from a local store! . Thanks for clearing that up and it works well because the fish I have looked at today were being advertised as Gold Saum. And do look Identical, I have had this fish for 2 years and the growth has been quite slow, though it has been in a tank with Bigger more dominant fish. would suggest it is approx. 6 inch now.

They are different in my opinion. The body shape is slightly different and the colours are obviously different as True Green Terror's have white along their dorsal and tail and are often called White Saums(I think, this may be a third species though I'm not sure... That it confuses me) :)

As for your fish, if it is 6 inches and no hump I'd be inclined to think it may be female. However! Before adding another fish please read up because as far as I'm aware breeding them can be difficult if they've not grown up together as the original fish may see the new one as an intruder rather than a mate and kill it :/
I wrote a care sheet up in the species section, here's the link :)

Many thanks, I introduced the male this morning, he was the most dominant in the shop and has an obvious hump, they have been together for about 3 hours and are swimming together with no obvious aggression from either party, the male is a good inch smaller which is probably helping, its a big tank (660lts) so there are plenty of hiding places if needed, I will post updates as to hoe I am getting on.

Good, good :) My advice is just keep a close eye on them :) If they start fighting badly then separate but if they are fine then leave them.

They are in with Big true parrots and 2 large Oscars at the moment so plenty to keep them occupied, If they do pair up then I will be moving them into a breeding tank.

Ah nice! Nice to see someone who owns True Parrot Cichlids!

Most of the time you say Parrot Cichlid and people think "Bright orange and smiley things" XD

Sounds good :)

i'll post some photos, I put so fresh fish trimmings in today as a treat but it's made the water oily, I will take some tomorrow after a water change when its nice and fresh.
