From what I know, mature males are easy to distinguish with their large odontodes.


But if it's in the hope of potentially breeding them, I think you're up for a tough challenge. I've not come across any report of success. There have been some reports of some clutches, but no hatching.
Let me know if you know of any

Its not yet known if the more developed "shark fin" and or larger spots are found on mature males, L200's are cave spawners and so far there has been no official report of them breeding in aquariums.

that would be a good idea (if you could post a piccie)
the odontodes are the "bristles" on the sides of the gills.

You might be the fist to breed them !

Hes deffo got a pair ,cos ive seen em protrude occasionally.

Its the size that matters then...... ) )

Presumably those 'spines' facing northwest underneath the eyes are the odontodes?

If so,mine are considerably smaller that that one-possibly half the size

well how large is your fish at the moment (just body length - not including tail).
I would think it's just a young male.
Mine is approx 3" at the moment but not displaying any odontodes which leads me to think it's a female.

As these fish grow fairly large (8" or so are reported) they may not develop odontodes fully until half that size. But I'm not an L200 expert ....

cant really tell, get a pic closer up to the face with pectoral fins/gills in view.
