I guess this has been asked before but i can't find an answer

Is there a general guideline for telling the sex of fish?

I have quite a range of different species all bought as young in 2 tanks.... I've sat and studied all of them and appart from a size difference in some of them i can't see any variations.

I've read that some species are born sexless and develop sexes as they mature..... if i had 2 young, would they become 1 female and 1 male or is it not that straight forward?

Thanks in advance

which species of fish are u on about?

as u cant tell with some fish untill spawning

jen

mate it varys according to species, some like guppys are easy to see and with help of the males gonopodium.
cichlids take a while before you can determin what sex they are,,,even then with cichlids like oscars its diff on correct way is with the breeding tubes,,,then theres fish which can change from females to males in everyway,,,,best to say what fish you want to know about and see what people say pictures would help greatly :good:

well mainly the list is...

Tiger barbs, 4 number..... one smaller than the other three
2 albino catfish... both look the same
2 pleco's... not sure which type but one was quite a bit smaller although now both are similar sized
5 zebra danio... all look the same
4 black neon tetras
4 red tail neon tetras
and a couple of albino frogs... again one smaller than the other

I'll go dig out what pics i can find :good:

Not very good pics i'm afraid as my camera's not up to much but.....

No pics of the danio's and tetras i'm afraid

A few things. I don't know how to sex your fish (if it's even possible) but they will outgrow that tank. The plecos and silver sharks will get too big. The albino cats are cories and prefer to be in larger groups. And your tiger barbs I believe are black skirt tetras (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi)

Really? just goes to show, you shouldn't listen to PAH staff

I am already aware that i will need a bigger tank in the not too distant future although those pics don't give a true impression of it.... it is a 4ft by 2ft high by 16in deep

With Danios, the males are longer thinner, and females have rounder tummys.

Not 100% but as to the Tetras, my males seem to have longer skirts and a tiny fin on top near the tail that the females do not have.

You can tell by watching them, the males chase females !
