hi my severum is showing all signs of hole in the head, she is ten years old. I have treated with interpet 9 and am now treating with octozin tablets. my main concern at this time is she is not eating. my water in tank is fine and has been tested. has anyone had experience with this disease? and can advise me on what to do and what the outcome may be  thankyou

My mate took his in a bucket to the vet to get the proper medication. Can't recall what that was though, sorry.

I know you will tell me that the water is fine, as you have in the past when you have had problems and dying severums, however, I will ask, what are the water stats for ammonia, nitrIte?

HITH is usually caused by water quality problems so your first job is to do a large water change and keep these up, how often do you water change?

hi my ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 0 i usually do a water change every week but since severum has become poorly i have been doing 20% a day. I realise now that my severum that died 2 months ago had hole in the head too but was finding it hard to diagnose. I treated this severum now wiht interpet 9 and am now treating with octozin. I am sure this disease is not caused by the water in both cases. I am doing my best to find other info on this disease, it seems there are many different factors that can cause it. today my severums head seems like its healing but my main concern is she is not eating for 3 days now.As she is ten years old i realise she may be weaker now.

You sure shes ten? I thought they only lived for 5-7 years max :S
Nope, even longer than 10 has been reported.
With my oscar I rescued with HITH I did daily 100% water changes for I think like 3 weeks, with I think some meth blue (ages ago now).Offering him anything he would eat to give him some strength. That was very severe and HITH.

As the above said, HITH is normally caused by either poor water quality or poor diet. A certain parasite (I believe Nematodes) have been said to be linked to HITH but I am not sure how true this is. What are you feeding your fish and how often? Sometimes a tweek in diet and a few more water changes can cure HITH, but in some cases medication will be needed. Metro is the best medication to knock out any nematodes. I would use 100% metro, normally solded by Seachem. Dose the recommended amount every 12 hrs, and make sure to sprinkle into food because the best way to administer medication is orally. Hopefully you can get him back onto food but it can be hard to bring them back around once they have stopped eating :/

Good luck.

Wow, never even knew they had brought out a treatment, as you said its hard to even know exactly what it is.

Metro is actually a wormer/internal bacterial med, it works to treat HITH too though, but isn't marketed as a cure itself, :p if you get what I am trying to say.

There are a few HITH specific medications like Hole-N-Head guard by Jungle and AP Hex-out.

well its more than obvious that you have a big problem even your water test results show that :/ HTH is an awful illness for large fish, well fish of any size but its deffo derived from poor water and husbandry,so take the advice and offer, i too rescued an oscar with HTH and a lot of fresh water changes cleared it up,its also contributed to by a poor diet,so make sure that you hve that under control, but your water deffo has issues, and i suspect that those results may not be accurate

Yeah, I've heard of treatments stating they treat HITH, but haven't heard any real success story's of using them...Just looked up metro and its marketed as "worlds first HITH treatment"...With other strict guidelines to follow.

this morning all the sores are healed, she came to glass when i added food, but never ate:( i am going to buy some brine shrimp today with added garlic hoping this will tempt her. I was reading that carbon can be an issue with hole in the head? yes she is 10 years old , i have had her for 9:) my fingers are crossed for her recovery. thankyou for all your advice. my main issue now obviously is her eating, i have tried all the things she normally loves but she is not interested. I hope the garlic helps:)
I obviously cannot waterchange at moment as i have one more day to medicate with octozin.
