What would be some good starter tropical fish to get? I want something that looks unique and colorful but that can live in freshwater. any suggestions?

Well in terms of unique starter fish, they are hard to find. Most unique fish are not usually good starter fish. But I would go with either of the following:
- killifish ( but yet again not all are starter fish )
- endlers livebearers
- hatchet fish
- sailfin mollies
- kribs
The list can be very long, these are just some of my personal selections.

The first thing to start out with is how large is your tank? Not just volume, but dimensions. It makes a difference to decide what kind of fish, because there are some great schooling fish, but they require a lot of room to school together. Mollies are great for their colors. Harlequin Rasboras are my favorite schooling fish, but I would want a dozen of them minimum in a 30 gallon or larger.
