I am in the process of re-setting up my 46 bow front.
I have a UGF for it and 2 strong powerheads to move the water through it. I used this when I had my oscar setup.

I was wondering if I should use the UGF this time around. I hate to waste the power heads.

My main filtration is a Fluval 304

Thanks

Depends, a 304 plus a UGF with 2 big powerheads is a lot of filtration. What do you intend to keep in the tank?

UGF's work very well and have few problems if properly maintained, unless you want to go heavily planted or have fish which routinely excavate the gravel down to the plates. The gizmo freaks will tell you they are useless, but people had nothing else for decades and kept fish perfectly well.

its gonna be a tropical community tank. Nothing as messy as the tiger oscars it originally housed.

I have a 46 gallon bowfront too, and use a Fluval 303 on mine and it works great by its self, no need for any other filter in there. You could always use the powerheads to create a little current if you wanted, I use one in my tank just for that purpose.

You can use the ugf, but I don't see the point. The Fluval can handle more biological filtration then you would need, and undergravel filters can't be cleaned of the gunk that they build up under the filter plates. On the other hand LL has a point, they have been used for years successfully. Personally, I wouldn't.

I wound up putting it in there. I figure if nothing else it'll make sure there is a good current in the tank with the powerheads and will give me a good source of airation if I decide to use the air tubes on the powerhead.
