Semaprochilodus Taeniurus. Need Info.

Fish Base

They are somewhat territorial, but nothing major. They need a large tank as they grow to about a foot and are pretty active. They are herbivores and will eat most plants. There is not much know about breeding in aquaria.

Very beautiful fish. When I had mine, he would graze on the glass and drift wood and ate lettuce, zucchini, cucumber, and algae tablets (plus anything else that floated past it). It was doing great and growing fine in my tank, but died suddenly for no reason. Looking back now, I think that it was a lack of extra oxygen in the tank, since it seemed to go to the top quite a lot, but I really don't know. Gets 12"+ and needs lots of space, since it is pretty active. I wouldn't recommend adding more than one to a tank, unless it is a very large group (which would require a very large tank, anyway).

I think that's it?

Yes, very beautiful. I had mine for about 3 years before I sold sold it to the lfs when we moved. It was definitely the main fish in the tank and the one people always noticed. I had lots of aeration, so I can't really comment on how well this fish does with low oxygen levels.

I only kept mine for a short while. They destroyed the plants even with copious feeding of "better" vegetable food. They form large shoals in the wild, I recall a former mod, (Ryan), had a picture somewhere, can't find it now of course, with a group of dozens of full size fish feeding on the surface of Rio Negro I believe. Big, very active fish prone to jumping.

ISTR CFC had some at one point.

I've had my Flagtail Prochilodus for about 2 years now. He's currently about 10" in a planted 75 gallon tank, soon to be moved into a 180 gal.
They get along well with other community fish and eat zuchini, algae wafers and blood worms. They are terrific algae eaters and in my experience only eat plants that have very fine leaves and stems.
They should be kept separate from others of the same species, as will become agressive to one another.
Murphy (as I call him) is my favorite fish and is very personable.
