Selling bettas at the flea market?

Only thing I could forsee being a problem is them getting too hot or cold, or being left in cars while the new owners shop.

I'm not sure where you live, but I know around here in the summer time it can get up to 100* out in the afternoon, yet start out around 60* in the mornings, and since they would be in critter keepers...there'd be no way to regulate the temp.

I know from experience you make no money from breeding animals, not if you do it the proper way...the before, during, and after expenses always crop out any profit you make.

If you wanna do it to put some quality bettas on the desks, shelves, and tables of your local residents and bump up the betta knowledge along the way..then I think it's a good idea...if you think you're gonna turn a profit..I think you may be a tad disapointed in the long run.

There is a general price breakdown in this thread http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showto...breeding+bettas you may want to scout through it and see how much it *can* cost, although it could cost more..depending on your locatioin.

They wouldn't be left in the car while shopping. The kritter keepers have a handle where the kid or parent can easily carry them around. I am thinking the completed kritter keeper would weigh about 5 pounds maybe less? It wouldn't have water in it since the betta would still be in it's plastic jar. Then whenever they got home, they could set up his tank and then add the betta.

Profit would be nice, but it's not the main reason I'm going to do it. I've always wanted to breed bettas and if I can give them away to a good home and teach people about them, I think I've done a good job already. I think I can about break even, if not lose a little.

Oh, and I have my 120 gallon I could always add the females too. I am not 100% sure if I am going to do it. If I am, it would be in atleast 2 or 3 years from now. Who knows, by then I may not even like fish anymore. ;)

I thought you could look at this link raechal, so you could see the other side of the coin. I know betta lovers wouldn't wish to be cruel to betta's particularly if you've put the care into breeding and raising them from fry.

http://www.orca.org.au/fish.html

They were being sold at the Brunswick Markets here in Brisbane, but were banned on the basis as a cruelty to animals (it's quite hot here and that caused some of the problems to be accelerated, but some problems would exist in cooler climates anyway).

Think hard about it. It might be more feasible to set up a different kind of shop, on-line and just pass out fliers at markets etc, or set up a mini shop inside someone elses if they are agreeable, or sell/trade at the lfs. Lots of different ideas, maybe some could be generated for you here.

I'm not trying to rain on your parade, I just thought you should know there is always a flip side.

Good Luck!

That last link was most interesting.

I to have been looking at this. My original idea was to offer a complete kit including fish on ebay.

Some of those conditions are extremely poor. My guess is the fish were brought not bred by the person selling them.

I took two of my young to my brother some 100 miles away this weekend. They travelled in luxury with fresh water and snacks for the road! I doubt very much this would have happened to all of those fish.......

There are a few things you could do:

Sell the package but not the betta on the same day. So for example they pay the money and get a ticket to come back the following week to collect the fish. This eliminates the impulse buying as people who are not genuinely interested would not want to wait.

Also by having a week to set up the small tank the end user can get everything ready for the new fish.

You could also take pictures of the fish you have in stock at home. Then you only have to transport them to the stall once.

All very interesting stuff.
