I may sell my tank. (The new one.) And I would keep the old 29 gallon and 10 gallon. I am going to wait a while to get the rest of the stuff for the 30 gallon I have been given.

The reason to all this is... Smokey the stray cat!!!! He is the sweetest, most lovable, big cat in the world. He is a pure bred maine coon. The reason I know he is pure bred is this. Ok sad story...

When we first moved here there was a sweet 'stray' cat running around. He had (still has) mats all over him, he looked sick, it was just sad. Oh the poor thing was plainly neglected.

We saw him running around, fighting with other un fixed cats, begging for food. We started to put food out for him every day.

So a little while later my brothers 'friend' came over. He lived a street over. Smokey was in our yard. My brothers 'friend' told us that was his cat. I was astonished! That poor thing had a home and was being neglected! They clearly were not feeding him, or brushing him, or taking him to the vet. My brothers 'friend' would pick him up wrong, a way that hurt him. He was rough with him.

So after a while I had enough. I made a box with blankets in it, food, water dishes, ect. I got them ready. When my brothers 'friend' came over I asked nicely if we could 'take the cat off their hands'. He said ok!
His mom came over to pick him up and he told her that we were going to have him now. Then she replyed...
"Of course not! How could you! We payed 200 dollars for him! He is a pure bred with papers! He was expensive! He is ours!" Omg how could she! If she payed that much for him why doesnt she take care of him! Uh people can discust me.

So at the end of the year, they ended up being kicked out of their house! They were renting from my fathers friends sister. They trashed the house. They had a dog that was tied on a leash all day long. He would sometimes get off the leash and would be running loose! He was very mean too! They had other cats too... Ugh. So they moved to a different part of town in the run down apartments. They left smokey behind. So they dont really want him but they dont want anyone else to have him either. Selfish! So they just pretended he wasnt their cat! They dont even know where their new cat (yeah new cat!) is! She is running around some where pregnant is what the dad said!

Ok a year later from all this the cat is still a stray running around. He is matted so bad. He looks so bad. Worse then before. So the poor thing loves me to bits. He is so sweet! I feel so bad! So I am going to save up all my money to get him fixed and get all his shots. Also I am going to take him to a groomer.

So does anyone know how much it was roughly when they got their cat fixed? Or when they took them to get groomed? Or the normal check up?

Wish me luck!

Check for a local Angels of Assissi in your area. They neuter on a sliding scale dependant on your income. Or ask the local ASPCA for low cost vets. Good luck with the poor dear.

More on Smokey the sweety:

Two weeks ago Smokey and my cat Sammy got into a fight... Not good results.

Sammy is the biggest softy I have ever met! He is fat and lasy.

So I came home from school one day and my mom tells me that smokey and sammy had had a fight. She said that Smokey had just pounsed on him! She had to grab sammy before he got really hurt. Sammy has two big wounds on his arm. We have to get his first check up soon anyway so we are going to take him to the vet.

This is one reason why we NEED to get Smokey fixed. Smokey just sees Sammy as another (unfixed) male in the neighborhood, who he has to compeat with for females.

Another thing
Smokey is the dad to our new kitten! We got her in September. She is long haired and grey just like her father! She is adorable. But then she has the pretty face like her calico mother (another neglected cat in the neighborhood that I will not get started on talking about their owners). Oh it is going to be so great having Saphire to have her daddy!

I think that it's great you are taking him in. The poor kitty. I hate when people treat thier pets like that. As for the cost of neutering its generally $100+ depending on where you are. However if your short on cash there's a animal welfare group that promotes spaying and neutering of pets. They can get you a discount certificate, to use at participating local vets that makes the cost MUCH less. I got my male dog neutered through them and it only cost me $30.

If your interested check out thier site http://www.SpayUSA.org

Good luck!

It's so great you are doing that.

But there is another thing - the family that abandoned him. If they appear to be mistreating their animals like they did Smokey, that is a crime. I don't know if you don't want to do this to them, but I would - call an ASPCA or pound. Those animals don't deserve to be treated that way.

I think its great what you are trying to do but i think before you even consider trying to bring Smokey into your home you need to get Sammy neutered and your queen kitten as well

If both sammy and smokey are running around the neighbourhood fighting with other full toms and mating queens they could be carrying all sorts of diseases and as smokey is dad to your kitten you dont want her having kittens to her dad or to any tom really

wow a Maine coon, its a cat i would love to own. now if the cat officially belongs to them, and is left running wild, could the authority's, not charge them for the neutering and the remedial treatment? also if you involve the authority's, and state your willingness to keep the cat, the cat would be officially yours. if you spend the money and these lowlifes, see "their" cat all sorted and nice. there is a chance they could try to reclaim him. and legally they would have every right to do so.

let us know how this goes, and i would love some before and after pics of smokey

ooooh you lucky thing. I adore the breed. I would enquire at several vets as to the cost and if they do discounts for neutering. Of course he will also need shots and possibly a microchip to prove ownership should the nasty previous owners try to claim him back after all. Once he is microchipped in your name he is legally yours. Phone some groomers to get his coats sorted out and so that you can comb him daily to keep it looking nice.
A friend of mine has several Maine coons and she calls them 'manky loons'. If you were near me I would offer to do it free of charge for you as I am a qualified groomer. I am owned by 10 cats . I love cats. And dogs...ferrets....fish....parrots.....chickens.....mice.....hamsters....tortoises........ in fact anything furry or feathered and non human.

Oh dont worry. We are way ahead of you. Sammy is young and we have been planning on getting him neutered. We didnt plan on getting the kitten so she will be the last to get spayed. We have to play it save. That is why we have to get both Sammy and Smokey fixed before we bring him into the house. We keep Sammy and the kitten separated at all times too.

It's so great you are doing that.

Well it was a while ago. We should of called them, but they would of denyed him being their cat. It is a shame but I would have loved the aspca to get in on the case.

I love animals too. I would have so many animals if we didnt rent.

I live in Maine so I dont think that would work. But thanks anyway!!!

I love my kittys! I will post pics of smokey and the kitten! And the fluff ball Sammy.

I will get some pics up for you guys! And I will keep ya updated!

Told you that I would get pics up, it took awhile but I got to it! After all I didnt need to sell one of my tanks! I took it down for a while, but I am starting it up now. I did have to sell one though. Now here is Smokey all settled in!
